I need a little guidance with regard to the possible addition of Air Conditioning to a 1962 4 Spd. I have seen a couple of units which say up front no reconfiguration (except moving of radiator fill container), cutting of holes etc. It do get a little hot here in South East Texas. However I would not want to create a problem or situation I would be sorry of later. If you have any experience (good, bad or ugly) with this type of unit on a '62, I would sure appreciate it. This is not "I'm a gona'", but merely a consideration. Thanks a bunch. lltamc59. Gig 'em.

So from a fella who has a 66 convertable that I am constantly trying to get back to "factory" correct,so that I can have the car flight judged, and also the same person who is in the midst of a 62 build that is very far from factory correct I can understand your pains of what to do.
I can tell you I had to cut my transmition tunnel on my 62 to allow room for a differnt shifter and I was having troubles making the first cut thinking how will the next guy restoring the car be able to bring this back to factory correct, I had better be correct with my cut and then save the peice I am taking out.

WHAT WAS I THINKING

Well I cut the heck out of the tunnel and smashed the peice I took out just to prove to my self I am building this car for myself and the heck with the next guy,May sound strange but I purposely had to make that decision and I have not looked back once on this build since then.I also sold alot of the original parts I removed from the car instead of storing them as I have done in the past.(I just gave away my 289 HiPo manifold and carb and exchaust manifolds/headers from a car I built in the early eighties)

Now to get back on course with your question,I am not the type of guy to say
" Its your car do what you want"
Your asking because you want some advice, right, So my advice is.

Build the car to suite your needs today and 15 years down the road.If air conditioning is something that will make your car more enjoyable DO IT!

I am slightley over weight (30 lbs orso) So it is a major problem in the summer to be driving my 66,I will actually avoid driving the car if its TOO sticky out,But I just could never in a million years ever think of adding an A/C system to the car.I set out to build a NCRS factory correct car with top flight ribbons and I will never stray from that goal. But on the other hand One of the first items I ordered for my 62 build was the a/c sytem for it.(beside the frame and suspention)

Think what your ultimate goal is with the car and work towards acheving it. Now as for your a/c system

I purchased and entire system from classic auto air.The system comes with an entire new heat and ac evaporator that bolts in place of the old,NO new holes you just install a block off plate on the firewall.connects to all of you defrost ducts and you add some extra vents,You could possibly install the vents with double stick tape.

as for the compressor ,its just some mounting brackets No major problems here.

Mounting the condencer is also no major mods needing to be done, the hoses will pass thru the the old fresh air vent area.

Then lastley is the controls.the kit comes with new control cables but you have to modify your old contol knobs,so you may want to remove your old cables and purchase a set of stock looking knobs to put on.As for the electric you could use the tap a line connector and when you want to remove the system you just wipe on a thin smear of clear sylacone to seal the wire back up.

It really seams like an UN-invasive system to install,

Good luck with your decision,
