Air Conditioning - to convert or not?

Need some advice -- I have a 1985 Corvette (100% original) and the air conditioner has stopped working. I am not sure yet what the repair costs will be, but I am sure that the repair center will suggest a conversion to R-134. Will a conversion detract from the car's original condition value? Other thoughts or things I should consider?

Weigh the cost of getting the R12 system fixed including the evacuate and recharge vs. the R134 Conversion cost. I have the same case with my '69. I don't like the idea if even after reparing the R12 system, I will be still locked in to R12 (or similar high cost alternatives) .

If you dont want to convert to r134, there is a r12 subsitute, i believe it is r112, not sure on the number, but it takes the place of r12 without converting the system and changing the compresor oil

A note on the conversion....134A is okay but, the oil has to be changed out completely. They also reccommend that after the system is converted and it runs for about a week, the oil should be changed again to remove any residual mineral that may still lurk in the system. The oils do not mix and can cause a blockage in the small orifice that controls the temp of the evap. Be careful and willing to spend the time on a conversion. I agree with everyones post here...see what's wrong with the 12 system first.

My guy (Mary Wells 196_ for you old timers) wanted $175 for a substitute R12 evac & recharge last year. My prior one with R12 was $30 bucks before the EPA got involved

The replacement I use is R-416. Also known as FR-12.

Which is a blend containing 59% R-134a.
