Air duct to throttle body

Among other modifications to my '86 L98, I replaced my stock throttle body with a BBK 52mm from Ecklers. Unfortunately, the air duct does not fit around the opening to the TB. It appears to be about 1/8 in. in diameter smaller the TB.

Where do I find a larger diameter air duct? Does anyone make one or do I have to fabricate my own?

Any help would be appreciated.

I used a heat gun on my Air duct to get it to fit on the 52mm, did the same when I had a 58mm..

heat it up and it will stretch

Thanks for the advice.

I also talked to an Eckler's techie who said that BBK does not make a larger diameter airduct for their 52 and 58mm TBs. His suggestion was to drop the duct into boiling water to soften it up and then form fit it to the TB.

I can't believe BBK built a throttle body that needs a different air duct size, and their vendors haven't received enough calls to generate a request for an after market application. I'm also surprised that Eckler's dosen't tell you this "side effect" of purchasing a larger throttle body.

i thought the 52 mm TB was the same size as a 48 mm TB?

use a hair dryer :D

Heres one that I made for my 52mm throttle body.
I call it the "t.c.a.i.s" "traffic cone air induction system":J :L
Yes made from an actual traffic cone that I bought from the "Home deput" for about $14.00.

Da Hawaiian Punch,

are you some modern day incarnation of McGyver? :L:L:L Wow, that's what I call improvising!

thats sweet, but how did you do it?
Well, let's see, I bought the cone from the "Home Deput" for about.... hmm...$15.00 bucks..some where around there.
I measured the length that I needed from throttlebody to air filter housing, and added i little more in length, just in case I end up a little short.
Make sure that you measure the width of the outside diameter of the throttlebody and the air filter housing before you start, a little big will be fine but to small you'll end up starting all over.
Split the cone in half, and this is where the measuring part comes into play.
Get the 2 ends and reform a "cone" each end has to be the same measurments as the to devises that it's going to cover. (throttlebody & air filter housing) addjust till you have the correct measurement's, mark where the cone over lay's.
Now your going to need some fence wire, or something like that, small gage, it doesnt have to be big, and with it you pretty much sew/stitch up the two ends where you marked at, before doing so, get some heat resistent silicone and put some on up the length of the cone then over lap the 2 ends and sew it up.
Now, after that, your going to need something that is stiff, yet flexible, like the...heck, let me just show you......

This band that I'm pointing at is what I used to stablize the inside of the cone so it wont callapse under strong vacum.
I cut the one end off that has the addjustable screw, so it'll be just the metal band itself, I connected them together inside the center of the cone, and also stitched it in, I'm sure you might have a better way to do this, but thats how I did it.
After doing the stitching of the cone and metal band thats inside of it, use a little more of the silicon where the wire goes in and out of the cone to keep it air tight. (no air leak's)
I suggest that you make this at night or when you dont plan on driving the car for a few hours to make cutain that the silicon is dry.
If you have any more question's on how to make this, just ask and I'll try my best to answer them.
I hope that this was enough info for you to make one of your own, I hear that these cones are now sold in different colors now.

Throttle Body Connection

I also made mine from Home Depot but i used the aluminum that they use to go from your house oil burner to your chimmney. Just get a piece they come somewhat rounded already cost about 10 bucks for a piece measure the OD and the length cut it get 2 stainless clamps polish it up to almost a chrome like finish and clamp it on. It will really dress up your eng. compartment.
good luck

me too

I'd like to see that too Rich.

I'm looking to do something with my '96, but I'm uncertain what to do with the MAF Air Flow that's in the middle of it. If I use something light like the traffic cone, I'm not sure it will support the weight of the MAF sensor square.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Thanks...BBT

You can also attach the picture by clicking the "browse..." button right above the "submit reply" button.

hey punch...

Hey Punch!

What ever I decide on, I'm sure I'll need your help to make it work!

I like your traffic cone mod, but I'm worried that the weight of the MAF Sensor square will be too much, since it's in the middle.

I haven't been able to find anything on the web that shows someone's car with the mod on my car (96 LT1).

Even the parts catalogs don't cover 96 for some reason. They skip it !?!

looks good man,is there a seam on the bottom,or is that solid?where it covers the t-body,is it metal to metal?or is there a seal of some kind.im sure BigBoyzToyz will need something similar to that.later,Todd.

custom air flow

Yes that is a seam. that was the 1st one i made just to get an idea and i haven't had the time to make another and have it somewhat perfected a little better. and yea no gasket just metal to metal with the clamps
