Help! Air Intake Sensor

I have a 2003 Z06 and I installed a Vortex cold air system awhile back. While installing, I noticed what looks like a plastic plug approx 1 1/4" in length attached to the end of a cable/wire. It's black in color and looks similiar to a microphone plug-in for stereo headsets. Since I didn't know where it came from I left it where I found it, at the lower right front inside the radiator shroud. My gas mileage has dropped from 31 mpg (when driving 65-70 mph) to 24 mpg. Is this gadget part of my air intake system that reads air temp into my intake? If it is, where does it go? ;help

It goes in the fan shroud area in a small hole down on the front right side of the shroud, I will try to take a picture of where it goes if I can
