I have 1986 coupe and was asking a simple question. How do you remove the air intake housing. The piece the air filter screws to I see it has to knobs on top, up on top of the radiator and they spin around and around but they never come out. Was wanting to remove to make it easier to install my new smooth bore throttle body intake hose, old acordion hose had crack. The new hose doesn't flex and it is very difficult or impossible to install new hose.

... they spin around and around but they never come out.

Common malady. The repair, once you are able to get the air box off, is to pop rivet the tabs in place that hold the screws/knobs. It's a poor design to begin with, and every C4 owner goes through this at one time or another.

There a various tricks for removing the housing when the screws/knobs start spinning without coming out, the simplest being to wedge a screwdriver or something similar in there, and applying pressure to the retaining nut, thereby holding it in place while you unscrew the knob.

Good luck. :CAC

Thanks for the information was getting frustrated installing dam thing anyway and had already purchased a new original style. Glad I didn't go through with that hard work.

nooooooo!!!!!

do NOT, I repeat NOT use that smooth hose. It gets brittle and splits on the underside causing all sorts of code 33's and 36's. The gain isn't worth it.
