Can anyone help me regarding the air pump on my 81 vette? If the air pump is disconnected, will there be any problems with the ecm, idle etc? If I remove the belt from the pulley, and also remove the hoses going to the check valves on the exhuast manifolds, would this be sufficient or would I experience problems? Thanks in advance for any help. MLD

I dont like to dissagree but his exhaust temps would go down for one.Tune ups would be easier and not mention if he takes it all off less weight and less clutter under the hood.Truthfully if you can ditch the entire feedback garbage and run a non ecm controlled HEI dist and a non feedback qjet youl be glad you did.

I took the belt off mine last year when it started squealing.... no problewms since!!!!!:thumb:thumb

You'll gain nothing by disconnecting the AIR pump- it uses only 1HP or so.
Thanks, not really looking to gain anything here but room, just wanted to know if there would be any adverse effects by disconnecting.

No problems with start up, idle etc?? Letme ask you another question, after disconnecting the pump(and experienced no troubles) did you install headers, and/or a true dual exhaust? That's what I would like to do. Thanks, Mld

Thanks for your reply. I was just wanting to know what trouble, if any I would run into if I disconnected that pump. It's uglier than sin, and takes up so much room. I was thinking of removing it, tossing the origianl exhaust manifold (tubes?) installing a set of headers and a true dual exhaust. If I am going to have to change distributors and control modules chips etc., I might as well do and engine swap and get rid of all the pollution junk at once. What do you think?? Thank you, MLD

My vette is bone stock, and I intend to keep it that way.
I do,however, have the belt I took off in the compartment behind the pass. seat

If you do remove all your smog stuff, don't toss it. The next owner may want a bone stock car and you'll be glad you saved it.

If you remove/disable the AIR system, be sure to remove the tubes inside the exhaust manifold as they will mushroom on the ends due to the high temp and the fact that they are no longer being cooled by the AIR pump. Then you'll have to cut the end off to get out and someone will have to buy new ones is they want to restore the system. Just a thought.
