AIR pump

The airpump on my 89 is getting a bit of a rattle,Im thinking of changing it over for a a plain pulley,was wondering if it effects the engine in anyway negative,what are things I need to consider in doing this swap.

From what I understand....the purpose of the air pump is to inject air into the exhaust to dilute the gasses out the tail pipe. If removed the gasses would probably be over the limit for emissions testing....
