For years, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, or AJAC, has been presenting the annual ‘Canadian Car of the Year’ (CCOTY) awards which recognize the best all-new or significantly-updated models in the Canadian marketplace each year.
The CCOTY awards are based on the input of a panel of voting journalists who annually take part in an exhaustive, week-long testing event, dubbed ‘Test Fest’ where they drive a field of vehicles slotted into pre-defined categories based on price and vehicle type, and assign points in a wide range of areas that determine a winning model in each category.
Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) awards results are based on actual scoring, objective data and back-to-back evaluation. Further, the CCOTY program relies on the scoring input of the widest range of professional automotive reporters in Canada covering a wide range of outlets in all media.
The CCOTY voting panel, comprised of dozens of Canada’s top road-test experts, evaluate each competing model in a ‘back to back’ fashion on the same roads, in the same day, and also on a handling evaluation course.
The back-to-back process sees Journalist scores combined with other data relating to factors like fuel efficiency, price, safety, performance figures and more; all to generate an overall score.
After the latest Test Fest event came to a close last October, scores were tallied and the all-new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was called the ‘Best new Sports / Performance’ car in Canada with an eight-point lead over the competition.
