Just wondering how u all drive your trannys,Overdrive all the time or 3rd gear around town, does it hurt to drive always in 3rd gear as long your not at highway speeds.:beer

Since I can't go over 30 mph in town I just leave it on O/D.

Depends...

Where I'm at, traffic, mood, etc...
Around town in traffic, toss it in O/D and let do what it wants...back country roads on a nice sunny day, good mood, bad mood, in between, just need to burn some gas...pull it into 2ND and hang on tight! ;)

Of course I have been known to max out 2nd on the back roads...quick shift to 3rd alleviates any problems:bu

I'm new here... but I have 2 LT1 auto cars. both stay in OD pretty much all the time.

Trans position

Around town I keep it in 3rd; it adds compression braking on the downhills, keeps me more in the power band, and helps prevent me from speeding when I'm not paying attention.

If I decide to gas it, its good for 105 mph then I grab OD.

On the mountain roads and through downtown I keep it in 2nd because it shifts less often, lugs less, and its still good for 45mph.

When cruising down the highway usually OD for fuel economy, low engine wear, and quiet; grab 3rd and its time to pass.

The LT1 makes best power at higher rpms, 4300 pulls hard.

It does not hurt to drive in 3rd all the time, but higher engine and drivetrain speed increase wear. Are you trying to get 280k mi out of your engine or use the power and settle for 180k mi?

Have a good one; Chris N :cool

Chris,
If you are only getting 105 out of 3rd and only 45 out of 2nd...you need to check your trans! I get 105 out of 2nd and about 40 out of 1st. Thats just at redline in each gear a couple hundred RPM before the computer kicks fuel off.

Let me first say I like to treat my auto like a stick.. I like to shift it it's my prefferance..

Well now let me say this.. if you leave it in OD in regular around town driving.. it will shift into OD when off the gas or slight throttle then it will down shift when you give it some pedal.. and back and forth.. Which puts wear on the 3-4 clutch pack I think leaving it in 3rd is better for that kind of driving. The 3-4 clutch pack is a weak point or a high wear item of the 4L60E.. just my opinion from what I have read and seen.. I could be wrong but I do have to say I have some experiance with trans's..... now the opposite side of this say you leave it in OD the benifit is Fuel consumption lower RPM's less fuel used.. but for me and I'm shure most of you feel the same way fuel mileage is not the point of a vette... I'm off to bed..

I leave my 84 in OD all the time. It will not go into 4th/OD till speedo reads 33-35mph. even letting off the gas doen't induce it which is very good. My 2nd gear is good for 75mph/4500 RPM then it shifts to 3rd. I have never done WOT from dead stop to see where 1-2 shift occurs. All I know is on the hiway the other day I was pulling hard at 110 in 3rd gear. Long Live CFI!!!!

common shift point

LT1Vettepilot, my '96 will pull past the speeds that I listed and the trans works as designed.
Under normal spirited driving conditions around 50 and 100 mph is when I'll shift to 3rd or 4th respectivly.
Now and then I'll bring it to redline which is faster.

Although the 4L60E works fine I'm not totally satified with the shift points and characteristics. I may buy the Hypertech reprogrammer and see if its program works better.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on how the Hypertech program works with this tranny?

Thanks, Chris N :cool

i leave it in OD...

except when i am driving here on the academy reservation, and then i put it either in D or 2...

this is because of the strict speed limit here on base and the fact that the hills here are steep as crap - don't wanna drive everywhere with my foot on the brake pedal...

I leave mine in D alot around town. Like Chris N explained. As soon as I jump onto the on ramp I get on it a little and then slide it into OD once I'm on the highway. I haven't had any problems driving it this way. I don't actually do the 1-2-3 manual shift though. Either D or OD.

Does anyone know why everyone I tell that I have a 4L60E tranny in my 92,thinks im crazy and insist its a 700R4 or whatever, I took the stamping off the tranny case, and with only 26K miles I dont believe that the tranny has been replaced, I know for a fact it hasent, is it possible that they popped a 4L60E in early for some reason, Hey maybe I have a rare bugger, lol, anyways, thanx for all the input concerning the shifting procedures.:beer

well I have a TPIS miniram II, so im sorta a LT1 guy?

:dance

and i've always left the car in drive while driving around town, and only put it in o.d. when on the highway.

This is a 700R4 car with 3.07 gears, well at least for now!

Everything I have read says that the 4L60E never appeared in C4's untli mid to late 93. The E is the electronic version of the 4L60 (which is really another name for the 700R4 design). You would have to have a 93 or later ECM with the appropriate wiring harnesses to the tranny for a 4L60E to work as the ECM controls a lot of functions in the tranny that were controlled by things like fluid pressure in the 4L60.

The tranny ID for a 92 that is stamped on the lower right body rail just above the pan gasket is broken down this way:
92 - Model year
YK - model (example)
M - Hydra-Matic 4L60
nnn - julian date of mfg
x - shift build where: A & B is first shift and C & H is second shift.

There are also 7 possible positions on the tranny where the VIN number is stamped that should match to the car. Two are at the point where the tailshaft attaches to the case at the vertical parts of the end of the case. Two more on the left and right side of the bellhousing on vertical surfaces at the lower bellhousing bolt holes. A horizontal tab on the right side just behind the right side lower bellhousing bolt and the angled portion of the case on the right side just above that horizontal tab. Another place is just above the tranny ID number.

Well the stamping on the body of the tranny above the pan is clear 92, M, date is 9th month, I remember posting about this months ago, so according to the stamping it is a 4L60E thats why i am puzzled............................

LT1 Automatic Drivers

On the highway I'm always in O/D. Below about 50 MPH or when I'm on back roads she's usually in 3rd. I leave it in third in these situations to reduce the number of 3-4, 4-3 shifts. I don't know if this is a factor but someone once told me that heat is the worst enemy to a transmission and these shifts create heat. I'm also thinking that my transmission only has so many gear changes in it's life. I'm just trying to reduce the number of what I see as unnecessary shifts.

O/D for me

Most of my driving is highway .
