ALMS: Corvette Racing to make GT2 bow at Mid-Ohio
The factory Corvette squad will return to American Le Mans Series action next month with a pair of new GT2 C6.Rs.
The Pratt & Miller-run squad, which has dominated the GT1 category for the past decade, is making the transition to the GT2 class to take on the might of traditional pace setters Porsche and Ferrari.
Having won the GT1 class of the Le Mans 24 Hours last month, Corvette has now retired its C6.Rs, but will be back at Mid-Ohio with a pair of its GT2 spec cars to be driven by regular factory drivers Olivier Beretta / Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen / Johnny O’Connell.
“For several years now, the competition in GT2 has been the closest and most competitive among all our classes,” said Scott Atherton, American Le Mans Series Vice President and CEO.
“With the new of Corvette Racing’s official entry into the category at Mid-Ohio, the class quite possibly becomes the most competitive ever. It also serves as another example of the continued growth and success of the American Le Mans Series. Corvette never truly left, but it’s safe to safe to say that they were missed by the countless participants at our Corvette Corrals and fans worldwide. We would like to be the first to official say, ‘welcome back’.”
Corvette Racing’s 70 ALMS class-victories is more than any other entrant and it won eight consecutive GT1 championships from 2001 to 2008.
