Alt. question on 80 vet

I purchased a chrome 100 amp alt. the vendor told me that there is no need to change the size of the wire going to the new Alt. My vet has a 12 gage wire to the alt. now, I know that a 100 amp alt. needs a 10 gage. I will not be using more amps, my question is will the alt. be puting out 100 amps if the system is not calling for it? I don't want to change the wire if it is not needed.

The alternator has a regulator built in,and is regulated to what the vehicle actually needs to maintain the battery and any accessories!!

PS If you want to put a Winch behind the front bumper,You'll need a Bigger Wire!!

Thank you for the information, I was thinking of puting a plazma tv and a refrigerator in the back. just kidding !!

I think with the plazma TV you'll be alright,but the refrigerator you'll probly have to go to 10 ga wire!!! Glad to Help!!

personally, i would change it to 8GA. otherwise you could overload the wiring when the surround sound , microwave , popcorn popper, rice cooker, clothes dryer , toaster and clock radio all running. seriously, I would go to a larger wire because the new alternator could overheat the smaller wire in a situation where the alternator hits maximum output... such as after prolonged parking with lights on motor off, hard starting, night driving with a/c, lights , stereo etc.
