Beretta Repeats as Portland Pole Winner
http://www.corvetteracing.com/

Corvette Racing driver Oliver Beretta won the GT1 pole at Portland International Raceway for the second straight year and the third time overall in qualifying today for the American Le Mans Portland Grand Prix. Beretta was the fastest qualifier for a record 16th time in his ALMS career, breaking a tie with his Corvette Racing teammate Ron Fellows for the most career poles in the series' history. The driver from Monaco also set the PIR qualifying record, lapping the 1.96-mile circuit in 1:08.193 (103.682 mph) in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R. His time eclipsed the 1:09.981 mark he set one year ago in the Corvette C5-R

I was there! The C6R's were awesome!

The Saleen would have been competitive except it was involved in an episode that was not the Saleen's fault. The Saleen led the race early on. The Masseratti was fast and pretty. It was third in GT1 early in the race, but could not keep up the pace. The C5R was a tick slower, but made no errors and did not break. The Viper was simply not a factor.
There was a Corvette Corral for parking, and a Corvette hospitality tent that really helped during the heat of the day. It was hotter than I had expected, and hotter than the weatherman predicted.

The Saleen S7R is a beautiful car and Steve Saleen has done a fine job - even it it is powered by FORD! Beretta was catching the Saleen and I can't remember if he passed before or after (I believe before) the Audi disintegrated and caused Terry Borcheller to spin. The Saleen was on a softer compound making it quicker early on in the race.

Remarkably, the 4 car didn't really miss a beat after being hit by the Audi either.

I think the move the Audi tried to put on the #4 C6.R when he wrecked him was pretty low, he should have waited till after that corner.

I actually think that he realized that he was not going to make the pass and spun himself trying to avoid Beretta - but hit him anyway! Does show how tough the 'Vettes are.
