Another ignition switch question

What makes the lock cyl. return from the "start" position back to the "run" position? Mine has started this thing where I have to manually turn it back to run after the engine starts. Like a spring is not working. Is it just a worn out lock cyl. or something in the column itself? Thanks in advance.
