Pke
I have a '95 and am not sure it's the same as yours but here's how the '95 works.
With the fob programmed per the owners manual, you may change the 'mode' from two door to one door or from on to off.
To change modes;
With the key in the ignition and set to 'off', (I usually have the doors closed sitting in the car but don't know if this is necessary), hold down the fob door button. In a second or so the door locks will twitch slightly -- keep holding the button down. In about 2-5 seconds the door locks will cycle fully. The system will then be changed from one to two door operation (or vice versa).
With the key out of the ignition, holding the door button down (again until the door locks cycle fully) will switch the system off or on. When 'off' is selected, the "Passive Keyless Entry" lamp on the dash will NOT illuminate upon ignition "on".
Two cautions;
The service manual warns to have the radio turned off during fob programming (setting it so the car recognizes the fob).
My car's pke doesn't work correctly if my cell phone is charging from the cigarette lighter. It's difficult to predict what it will do but in all cases the range is reduced to about 1' from the driver's door. In fact if the cell phone is in the car and turned on, the pke gets iffy.
Hope this helps
PS The service manual also lists a diagnostic procedure to get codes listed by the PKE dash indicator lamp if you need them.
