Any educated guesses?

I had my new stereo installed last Fri., as well as a switch for the antenna,
and everything seems fine but the SYS light will intermittently flash. I very recently had the entire charging system tested and it checked out fine. The digital volt gauge is reading normal. what would cause the light to flash, even after I've been driving for awhile?:confused It doesn't stay on, it just flashes a couple times and then goes out. The stereo job was very professionally done and I don't see where the two could be related but they must be cuz I've never seen that light before. It does it whether the antenna is up or down and like the orig setup, the switch for antenna only is active when the stereo is on.

Thx in advance,
Jeff

I don't have a guess, but that is one sweet looking vette you have! :upthumbs

Thx pal,
Wyoming? I just moved here from Casper not too long ago. Didn't have the Vette when I lived there. Man, my car would have loved those wide open spaces! All kinds of places to open her up!

What part of WY are you from?

Jeff

Well if it indeed flashed, can't you still pull the code off of what it flashed?? You might want to try that, other then that I dont know :confused

vettefan is right. If it did flash the code is stored in memory until it is removed. Try to retrieve the code. I dont know how you can do that on the 96, but I am sure someone can help you do that. Once you have the code it would narrow things down.

Just a wag but if the stereo guy tapped in or grounded something that he shouldn't have?? I've seen excellent stereo guys take a "shortcut" instead of running a wire & problems result. If it's consistent, then the way to test is to "undo" the install and see if it still happens.

Sorry not much help.

Man, I'm new to this stuff..I know you can pull codes when SES light goes on but I'm not so sure about the SYS. Anybody know? That displays by the speedo...not the DIC.

Worst case scenario..I will have them undo it and redo it...RIGHT!

BTW...Yeah I dropped the Triple Black thing after that guy chimed in and said it only applied to verts. Had me wonderin';shrug

This is typicaly not uncommon when new stereo equipment is installed. Depending on the AMP, and the complete system draw when the headlights are on, you could be at the high limit threashold of available current to give you an example( Try plugging your common houshold extension cord into your electric Shop air compressor), as you begin increase the volume of your stereo, you are also demanding a higher amperage to your system pre-amp. I installed heavy gauge POWER "MONSTER" Cable to a seperate power on the BATT buss, and then pulled a seprate chasis hard ground as well. Finally I installed a Supression filter to eliminate EMF. The factory setup is only for the factory stereo system, and has been designed just for that application. I am now pumping out 2000 watts of quality sounds with minimum colateral impact on the rest of the system.

Assuming the shop is as reputable as you claim then they more then likely disconnected the battery before the install. That would clear the codes that were stored.

I just helped my son install a stereo in his 99 Z-24 cavalier and the check engine light came on when I reconnected the battery. I was told that on his car, the light is cleared by a certain number of key turns if you don't have a scanner. It could be as simple as that.

Sounds to me like you're rockin'!!!:_rock

All I had installed was a pioneer HU ( no amp, speakers...yet) as well as the power antenna switch. Maybe the problem lies in the switch cuz when the radio is on and I hit the switch, I get a staticy (word ?) sound when it is raising or lowering.:confused

Thx but this is not the Check Engine (SES) it is related to the Charging System (SYS) at least I think that is what SYS is for.

SYS light

The SYS light on my '95 flickered when I bought it in 2002. Turned out the battery was original and replacing it fixed the problem.
There are a lot of threads on installing stereos and having the SYS light come on. Do a search on the 'Search' tab above. As I recall (dubious memory though), a resistor needs to be installed with the radio lighting circuit and most 'professional' installers know nothing about it.
Good luck

AHAA...maybe you've hit on something (resistor). The battery is strong. I will do a search on SYS as it relates to stereo install.

Thx:)

Bridger Valley in Southwest Wyoming. It is a great place to drive a Vette. The only problem is the long winters. I basically don't drive mine at all from Nov through April. When the roads are dry, sometimes I take her out in the winter, but there is so much sand and other crap on the road that I have to be real careful about how close I follow other cars. I usually just go in the garage and look at it. I never get tired of that! I hope you get your electrical gremlins solved.

SYS and New Tunes

OK here ya go....

You have to install 2 resistors into the power circuits for the new radio. I searched for the exact ones and how to a year ago. I have it printed up at home. The resistors are $2 at Radio Shack. The installer will have to go back into the wiring harness to install these in-line resistors. It makes the CCM happy.

This is such a common problem with these systems that I just can't believe more car stereo people don't know, but I have yet to hear of this being done right the first time. That SYS is very annoying but fixed easily

If you need the info and can't find it here or the other forum PM me.

Yeah it's nice down there but winters in WY are rough. When I first moved to Casper I didn't even know what an "engine heater" was. I lived in CA! Engine heater? My car already has a heater!!

Best to have a 4x4 for winter or at least front wheel drive.

Thx to the SEARCH feature I figured out the simple repair for my SYS prob. 2 resistors from Radio Shack and I'll be good to go! Gotta love the CAC!

Good talkin' to ya man...and...enjoy those open roads! Well... come April anyway.

Thx pal,
After doing a search I even ran across your thread....you were in the same boat! Bought the resistors last night and have an appt for install on 1/15. In the meantime I'll just have to live w/ the SYS flash. Hopefully the car will suffer no ill effects in the interim.

Excellent! When they do it they SHOULD disconnect the hot side on the battery, and that will reset the SYS. The code will be there until then. Raise hell and get them to do it NOW. The next time they fool with a Vette they will know.

The speakers you have are pitiful paper GM $5 models, WWII technology. When you get new speakers then it will rock from stock 10 watt speaks to the 50 per speaker you're pushing. After all that trouble I usually just lower the windows and listen to the car. Music to my ears!

I hear ya on all counts!
Actually...I'm gonna swing by there after work and tell them what I've found and see if they can get it done like...NOW! When I made the appt it was before I knew what the prob was so I was just gonna have tham take a look back at what they had done.
Now I know what the prob is and I want it "blinkin'" fixed! :L

As far as my speakers...I think the rears are aftermarket cuz it just sounds too damn good to be stock. The orig owner did add a 6 disc Kenwood (which took S@#! on me) into the back storage area so maybe he added rear spkrs as well. I had that pulled out as well as the brain box when I had the new unit put in.

I love to listen to my car also but rockin' has it's place sometimes too. I needed something a little more state of the art...the Delco sucked! Amp & all new spkrs eventually....

See ya :beer
