1993 Stock Bose.

Tries to read a CD-R, but can't quite get it. Anybody have luck with a particular style (gold, blue, silver face) or brand and can get their CD to play CD-Rs?

Unless your Bose is CD-R capable you will not get it to read them. I don't believe in 93 that was available. You may try a newer cd changer that is capable of reading them.

CD-R's

Once you get CD-R's to read, omit the nice labels that are available and use a permanent marker to label the CD's. The glue on the labels isn't too good in the heat and if it lets go in your player, it's a disaster.
Sometimes the CD-R drive in your computer will have detailed specs (hard to figure out). Some will generate a CD that can be read by some players. Try before you by the player is the only way to be sure.
good luck

jmccloud should be correct. When creating a CD from your computer, most CD authoring software will have the option so that all CD players can read the disc. I have not done this yet with my CD player in the 92 vette but I will confirm today.

Bose gold in 93

I just sent my bose gold off to Doctor Dons and talked to him about this very subject. He said that pre 93 won't pay cdr's and 93 on up will maybe depending on the recorder. He discribed it as a manufactuer of cds paints a perfect picture on the cd that is easely reflected and cdr's have the paint just slug on being less refletive. He said if the player does play them it will be working wide open maxed out on the laser and will skip easely and may not recover from the skip. He does offer a upgrade for all players that will put a better up to date cd mech in them that will play cdr's with no prob and won't skip and being I burn alot of cd's he's going to upgrade mine. Its costing me 150 for the referb and 175 for the up grade and 12 for shipping. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

(He isno longer a member of this site and his company as well has been removed. I deleted the address to his site due to that fact. eagle)

As I said earlier I did not think the 93 model would read the cd-r due to the software in the player. The technology was available at the time but was not introduced until after 93....

It is not an issue of the laser, it is the software that reads what the laser is picking up. If you look back the earliest protocol for the cd's was redbook....much has changed since then. Try recording a 48x cd on a recorder that runs at 10x....you get a 10 speed recording due to the software. Upgrade the software and faster speed is possible.
Several choices can be made when recording cd-r's...protocol includes Joliet, ISO level 1, ISO level 2 and ISO 9660. Using either level may render the cd usless in windows 3.1, and dos...but it is advisible to use the ISO 9660...as it is more inclined to work with most players.

Performed test on my 92 CD player with a CD-R and it worked just fine. Recorded the CD off of home pc with CD writer. Used Maxell CD-R Music 80 min (for audio recording). Actually was very good reproduction. 10 year old Bose Gold series and still sounds great.

Great Info. Thanks for the input.

bohms, could you PM that POC for the refurb vice posting it.

92ghost, I have closed out the CDs hoping to get it to work, but it would still skip around. Off to WalMart to get some Maxells they have to work in mine as well. Looking forward to giving it a shot.

Tx all.

I have a '94 Bose Gold Series and it had to be sent out to be fixed. Six weeks later...... I asked about playing CD-Rs and was told it would be hit and miss.

What works for me are Memorex CD-R, 80 minute, white background, thin silver lines. The other brand is Durabrand and it's half black and half grey. I've tried the coloured CDs (blue, red, green, etc.) and absolutely no go.

Another thing you might want to try is to first insert a store bought CD, play it for a few seconds then eject it and put in your CD-R. For some reason this works.

Good luck.

Ann

Yep, blue and green definitly out. Was thinking the silver, but they run more. Will give the Mem. a shot if the Maxells do not work out.

But did not someone tell you it needed to replace the cd changer to make it work...if I were you I might hold off on the change till you can see if in fact the type of cd makes a difference. I was always under the impression it would not play cd-r's but it looks like the newer technology has come through. Proves what was said in the emails about someone not knowing exactly what is going on....

Hey there Eagle, no one mentioned replacing the unit. I'll try the different CDs, I was hoping a different color CD might make a difference and it looks like it may. Wanted to save time on experimenting if others have already. The mod bohms mentioned may be a last resort. I want to keep a stock unit in the car and if DDs can upgrade software might be an option.

My player wasn't working to begin with thats way I sent it off to get referb I do record alot of cd's and don't want to buy special cds or software to be able to play them in the vette. I don't have to do that to play on my alpine or clarion or my walkman for that matter. I can't say I'd spend the money on the upgrade if the player wasn't already broken but it is and I want it done up right and want to keep the car orginal. I'm just trying to help with what I know and heard to share as much info with my fellow vette owners. I'll post the results on how the player works when I get it back I have some old and new cdr's recorded on all sorts of differant brand cd's to test it out with

Swing Baby! Maxells did not work, but the Memorex did. They are pretty close to having a silver face.

Hmmm, The Memorex worked but the Maxell did not. I'm curious to know the difference between the two... I know the Maxell's have gold artwork on the top face but I doupt that has any affect on the readability of the CD-R.

I use Office Depot 32x (cheap) & they work great but my Bose is a 1996 so that may be the difference. CDR color is kinda silver.

Are you finalizing the CD in the recording software after you record. A CD must be finalized to be read in other CD players. Do the CD's you have recorded work in other CD players? I've recorded lots of CD's on many different brands of CD media without a problem. All the blank CD's appear to work the same to me, so I buy the least expensive ones and have had excellent results.

Yep, been finalizing them. I think it has to do with the color of the media.

Not too sure about the color thing, I've used purple, yellow, green you name it and never had a problem. The cd is read from the side without the label, I don't see how the color can be the problem. I haven't had a problem in any of my vehicles with CD's I have recorded. Are you recording music that is in the correcxt format for an audio CD? I don't thin music files in an MP3 format will play correctly if at all.

You got me. I am well versed in the art of recording CDs, all others work in my other cars. The Vette is selective. Imations were the other ones I tried that did not work. Note that Dreamin mentioned colors that did not work as well. I did notice last night that yours was an '86 and has no problems. Interesting.
