Been kicking around the idea of swapping out the 4+3 in my car, for a beefed up 700R4/4L60. Figured if I was to do this, now is the time since the 4+3 works prefectly and could be sold to fund the auto swap...

Has anyone done this?

Bob,

it's straight forward. a 700R4 swap and everything bolts right up i'm sure. if not you might need a driveshaft out of an automatic.

let me know when you wanna get together or something you got my #

You may need some chipwork, too, as the ECM has some control over the tranny.

I like the 4+3, now beefed, some, behind my nasty 409. :w

Just to give you another train of thought, I put a Richmond 6-speed in mine:

Swapping your 4+3 for an automatic would be a lot of work! There is another transmission that will replace the 4+3. I installed a Tremec 5 speed in my '85. It shifts nice and it is quiet. It is the same length as the 4+3. There are several different gear ratios available with horsepower ratings of 500 and 600. Keisler Automotive sells a kit. If you want to test your fabrication skills and don't mind modifying the console, you can do it yourself.

Which Tremec did you use?

I used the TKO 500 with the ratios of 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.0, 0.68. Compared to the 4+3, this gives you a little more intense first gear but the OD ratio is the same. The TKO bolts into the Vette bellhousing and clutch. The only driveshaft modification is to put on a new yoke to match the transmission. I would like to be able to give a comparison of driving the 4+3 and then the Tremec, but I bought the car after the previous owner fried the 4+3.
