Anyone experience this? Grinding when shifting out of 1st Gear when cold on ZF-6

Hi all,

I just bought my ZR-1 (1994 #54, 16.5 kmiles). I haven't driven it much yet, but noticed a couple of times that when the car is cold, and I try to bring it out of first gear at low rpm, it sometimes grinds on it's way out into neutral. It's the ZF-6 of course.

It's never happened when the car's warmed up.

Anyone else experience this?

Sorry to hear about the grinding. Have you checked the level of the fluid? That's alwasy a good place to start. Unfortunatly, it can't be the shift linkage adjustment, since the lever goes right into the back of the transmission.

I had a similar problem with mine shortly after buying it. I canged the fluid and everyhting was back to normal. I'd start there becuse it's cheap.

How's your fluid level in your master cylinder reservoir? Do you have a firm pedal? You'll get a similar symptom if there is even a miniscule leak in the hydraulic system. It's possible that your master or slave are on they're way out. A quick visual check will rule either of those out.

Good tips. I was too focused on the transmission fluid in my initial response instead of remembering the hydraulic clutch and all of the symptoms associated with it.

I've checked the clutch hydraulic fluid level (that was my first thought) and all was fine there. I was thinking it was in the tranny though since it only happens in first gear and only when the tranny is cool. All other times it performs fine. In total, this has only happened 3 times, so it's rather spratic.

Looks like I'm off to check the transmission fluid level.
