If you've got a laptop and don't mind a minor bit of soldering, I can loan you my ALDL cable. Then you download WinALDL and have fun. You do need to add a DB9 connector to the back of the ALDL port (hence the soldering) which is just a matter of cutting and splicing some wires. The solder is to keep them together. I went the cheap route and bought the cable that doesn't have the ALDL connector on it.

Okay, so if I download win ALDL, and get a cable, I can monitor the engine systems and sensors?
Is the software a free download, or do I buy it? I can do anything with wires, adn solder, I have alot of experience. I would rather buy a cable and the program to have. I own a laptop as well.
But, do you have a COM port on your laptop. These things will only plug into a 9pin I think it is, com port. No USB. I had to buy a computer to use it. I still have the IBM thinkpad, cable, and program installed if you are interested. I went to EASE.
Moon, what do you have??? I need a laptop, with an OBD1 cable correct? What are the requirements for the computer to run this software? And just what exactly does this software do? Is it strictly monitoring?
I have an Auto Xray E Z Link scanner that I bought from Summitt Racing for $175. It comes with the GM OBD I cable and software. You can monitor the oxygen sensor real time while the car is running along with many parameters like TPS voltage, coolant temp, rpm, vehicle speed, manifold air temp, torque converter lockup, etc.
The one strange thing about this device is that I have to configure it for an '85 model to use with my early (iron head) '86 Vette. But it works just fine.
AI head/cam/intake, Vig converter, D44, EM LTs etc
On a later C4, a laptop, a cable and software are the way to go since you can tune them. On the earlier C4s a diagnostic scanner will suffice since the chips have to be burned off of the car.

rrubel, just what exactly do I need. That sight was a bit wordy, so I am kind of lost. I know I need a connector from my ALDL port, to a serial connection into a lap top.
Okay, my next question would be, where do I go to get software to burn my own chips. If I have to spend 200 more initially, to get something to burn my own prom, then that is the way to go.
Vetteboy, there's a LOT more to burning chips than just the hardware. For that, btw, you need a prom burner, software like TunerCat or TunerPro that lets you adjust the tables, and something like WinALDL and a cable that will let you monitor the engine to see how it's doing. However, there are so many parameters to worry about when creating a prom that you really don't want to just jump into it.
I would get:
- a cheap laptop
- one of the cables that you either make yourself or is pre-made
- a copy of WinALDL
When I read that website was late, and I worked all day. I didn't feel like reading through everything. I am in my fifth year at Purdue University College of technology with a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET). I think that I can certainly handle it. Basically last night I didnt' fell liek reading through that guys website, I just wanted someone to explain to me that had the experience of what I would need. I have found in my life that a friend that has experience is the way to go, then to go at it blind.
So with that said, I definitely want to monitor what is going on, but I see myself programming PROMS by next spring. I am sure there is alot to it, but I am working with microcontrollers right now, and have started learning them very well.
