Well basically, I didn't want to buy a cheap laptop, and then find out I cannot use the software I need to burn proms if that is the case. I can use my dell now with my ATMEL programmer, but had to buy a usb to serial cable.
I'm sure you know that USB Serial adapters are iffy on whether and or what they work with. But the laptop I have is not capable of burning on speed or disk size for sure. And of course Rich is correct, burning chips is much less about the computer than the knowledge of tuning the car.

Oh yeah, I am sure I will be doing alot of reading. It would be nice however to know what operating system, and parameters a computer would need to achieve all of the above mentioned. That way, I can get my ducks in a row.
I'm sure you already have a capable laptop, but I'm just guessing you are ahead of yourself on the rest. As you know, a scanner and a data logger are two different animals.
Vetteboy86, you don't need a powerful machine to burn eeproms... they're small (64k, I think) and the burners are slow anyway. A co-worker burns his own for robotic controllers using a desktop P-133...

I guess when I right programs, I have to use software to compile the code, to make it into an executalbe file that the micro will recognize. I then have different softeare to actually program the micro. I think I can compile with my PC, or my laptop for sure.

I need to verify my O2 operation still, but with these coated headers I do think it's going into closed-loop. After a fairly short distance (1/2 to 3/4 mile) the engine changes sound slightly and the gas mileage readout shoots WAY up - from 8 to 18 or so.

Vetteboy, don't think of this as writing a program - think of it as creating lookup data tables for another program to read. You're essentially populating a hardware database (MEMCAL) that the program (ECM) will read. Make more sense that way?

I scan and data log with EASE. I modify the tables with Tunercat. Then burn a new chip with the program that came with my burner. www.USTR.net was where I got the burner the EPROMER 6 it was like $100 and will burn just about any type chip out there (of course some you need seperate adapters.)
I've had good results with using a USB to serial adapter, but like Moon said sometimes they can act flakey. Something else you will need is a supply of chips AM27C128 ('90 and up use AM27C256) and an EPROM eraser (a strong UV light with a timer) Or you could go with an EEPROM which uses an electrical current to erase the chip, the part is AM29C256. To use this chip with your car you would need to double the file, save it, then burn it to the chip. These are great because you don't need an eraser, just tell the burner to erase it then after you modify the tables burn the new file back to the chip. Two of the EEPROM chips and a couple of regular EPROMs and you should be good to go. Use the EEPROMs while you are tuning then when you get where you want to be you can burn the file to one of the regular EPROMs which are more permanent.
If you want that car cover I could send you my EASE stuff to mess around with for a while, just send it back to me when you are done. As far as Operating systems I've used EASE with Win95, Win98, ME, 2000 and XP. Tunercat and the Eprommer program work with the above also.

tires were doing their job! best i could pull was a 1.93 60' time though :ugh they still got a good bit of meat left on them. made 6 runs that day and only spun them up till i seen a hint of smoke. i'm gonna try and stop over tomorrow and drop them off along with your helmet.
other news is..... i got the 700R4 with a 2800 stall put in the 85 TA i bought. having problems with starting issues. think it's the reverse lockout or something or another. once that is figured out i'm gonna work the bugs out of it and might install one of my roller cams i have along with the retro roller lifter kit i got with the 388 and see what she does. looks like the 388 might actually go in the Z when i'm done toying with the TA. long story short too much of a headache and $ to get a 400 sbc (external balanced) to mate up with a T56 6 speed. so i am thinking 406 build this winter. the 388 is done just need a set of heads.
