I am looking at a 66 427/425 roadster that has a few flaws. It needs a top, the paint is driver quality (not flawless) and is the wrong color, but one I can live with for now. Car should be silver. It also has signs of some body work on the nose, but only upon close inspection, and the body lines are good. It also could stand a new interior, as the one in it is original, but wearing pretty good except for a crack in the dash on the right side. All numbers appear to match, and the original motor is not in the car now(on a stand and rebuilt), but the replacement has the correct manifold/carb/dist, etc. from the original so it could be put back correct pretty easily. I am just not sure what this car should be worth, and hoped someone more experienced than me could put a price on it.
Thanks!

If the frame shows no major rot or twists, and it has the true original engine and the you can verify the owner history, my best $.02 would be in the $40k range.

66 is an off year

65-67 seem to be the MOST desirable ( with the 63 split up there too!)

30-35K based on your description, you will need a LOT of work to get it going again.. espically if you have to farm it out to a GOOD vette mechanic.

How's the frame as far as rust goes?

I would get it up in the air!

Frame looks good, and all signs of it being an original BB car are there. The date codes look good on the heads, block , and rear end (did not check trans). Is 40K too much?

Corvette Value guide:

"Any price guide is just that, "a guide". Vehicle condition, especially with collector cars, is critical to establishing a value. Presented here are values for all models of Corvette from the first to the last model year. Estimates are based on auction results, car corral sales, private transactions, personal observations by our field reporters, conversations with Corvette specialty dealers & franchised Chevrolet dealers, etc. Newer models produced in the last 5 years or so, High mileage is determined as anything more than 15,000 miles per year, on the average. High mileage late model corvettes are typically discounted 5-10%."

Parts car:
A vehicle that is about 60% or more complete, has desirable components, such as it’s driveline, and some reusable fiberglass body parts, as well as instruments, seats, glass, etc. Vehicle is not restorable due to sever body deterioration, frame rust, vandalism, damage, etc. and is useful only for parts.

Restorable:
A vehicle that is fairly complete, has all the key components, is essentially original with a numbers matching engine (where applicable, starting in the 1960 model year) and is restorable. May or may not be operable, and could be missing some major parts, but not to the point of being useful only as a parts car.

Driver:
A presentable, operable vehicle with all major systems functional, A street quality Corvette, possibly a daily driver in nice climates.Would need at least a cosmetic restoration to be show quality, but is fully serviceable as-is. Also a solid car worthy of restoration.

Very good:
An older restoration that is still presentable, or an amateur restoration of local show quality.Vehicle is complete, fully operational and ALL major systems function properly.Needs no major repairs; body, paint, interior or mechanics. Codes and numbers are correct, still has original engine.

Restored/Show
A high point authentic restoration of a soild Corvette. Show quality with FULLY detailed engine compartment,Undercarrige, and interior. All mechanics & componentsin perfect working order. NEEDS NOTHING.Codes and numbers are correct, still has original engine.

Concours:
Height of perfection, Bloomington Gold & NCRS, top flight quality, or better.Every component restored to perfect authentic condition.Original engine, all components are right & properly dated. All numbers match. A 98-100-point professional-quality restoration with no excuses!

Vig,
What is the description for daily driver?

On a lighter note...

I when I read the name of this thread on the home page it only showed: " Anyone want to put in their $.02 "

First thing that popped in my head was, "I would, but I haven't installed the change slot on my computer yet." :L

I crack myself up. Hope you got the joke. Sorry to go of topic.:)

Spiderman :w

OOps I knew I forgot something

Will edit the post later....

Basicly

A restorable car that runs & drives with 70% of the stuff working ( but all there) eg, radio not working/ A/C all there but discharged, mag rims, wrong paint, heater core bypassed, seats ripped with the spotted cow covers you got from JC whitney from your mother in law... you know the drill. like our cars.

Vig!

Thanks Vig.
The car I am looking at here would be a lot closer to "Very Good" than "Driver" so the price is not too far out of line.

Well it's supply & demand

And how MUCH you are willing to spend.

My search continues.. Good luck with yours!

Vig!

True, and to think I started out wanting a 20-25K driver!

Fixed the value guide

So we are in the same boat...I'm still looking for the 12-15K project car. The base problem is people think that have a parts car and it's worth 50K.

Sad.....

One thing to consider is how much can you lenjoy the car in it's as-is condition, and how long can you live with it like that?

If you can't get good use of it now, then begin your planning and estimating how much it will cost in terms of dollars, your time in working on it and how many months/years will pass without you using it while it's in the shop.

I did a frame-off restoration of a mid-year (ok, C2 for some of you..:) ) a few years ago and found that it's very easy to put $6,000 to $8,000 just in engine, front and rear suspension, brakes and lines, gas tank, transmission and differential. That included frame and suspension sandblasting and powdercoating, all new correct bolts and nuts, but nothing in bodywork, interior or paint. Most all work was done by myself or friends, so if you have to hire it done it might be double the figure above, or more.

It seems that conventional wisdom says to buy one that's already done if it is well documented with pictures and receipts, is cheaper than having one done.

On the other hand, there is lots of joy and satisfaction in doing it yourself, esp. if you can get some driving time in it before or during the restoration.
Best of luck
