Are Valve Covers Necessary?

I see that there are valve covers in some "under-the-hood" pictures, and then it some pictures there aren't. Maybe in the ones that aren't, they have them removed to work on with easier access. I'm not sure.

My question is do Vettes need valve covers? If not, what are the advantages/disadvantages to having them on?

yup they need to be there....it keeps the oil from exiting the engine.

TR, what you are probably looking at are the "beauty" covers (or whatever they're called) on the LT1, LT4, LS1 or the LT5, when you say you don't see valve covers.

Thanks for the compliment. You'll have to get one of the LT or LS guys to take some pictures of their engine both with and without the plastic covers in place. I can't help you there, sorry.

The C5 LS1 engine is a pretty ugly, messy thing to look at with four separate ignition coils and their associated wiring bolted to the top of each valve cover - that's why they have the plastic "beauty covers" over them - so you can't see the mess
