Ashtray always flips open ?

Since this thread is open, should the center console door only open about 3 inches? I don't want to force the hinges if they're just misadjusted but it seems like the door should open further than this. As it is, I can barely get my hand into the console.

This is for an '03 FRC.

Mine opens to a 90 degree, not quite as much with the parking brake set. Are you sure you talking about a C-5? he hinge is a little funky the way it works if you know what I mean ;shrug

Well said, it's actually kind of ingenious though, considering the limitations with the park brake lever. I only wish GM would have spent as much money on their electronics.

I second this, some engineer must have worked thorugh his break on this one :L

here is a picture. Note how the rear hinge lifts straight up.

NJ, we are going to have to get you a Photobucket account! :L

Here's a better picture:

...and yes, your console should open to a 45 degree angle.

Junkman... great job. I think that we got the message across! It took me a while to figure it out. The manual really doesn't describe it too well.

Pretty igenious design for sure and it works. Took some engineering :bash doesn't hold a lot but being that the button for the fuel door is in there I make sure when I have to access it that I don't have the park brake set :ohnoes

Darn it Junk, first a picture of you smoking an unidentified cigarette then the content of your center council ??? Man you have to be more discreet about this stuff:boogie

Thanks guys, and especially to Junkman for the super-detail photos. I have looked at the hinges with a flashlight and decided that they were a sort of dual-pivot design. I'll coax some lube into the mechanism and see if I can get them free. The entire lid can be taken off as well if I can't get the hinges free otherwise. I just didn't want to strongarm the lid and find the wink link in the assembly. I'll let the GM interior people do the stress testing for me. And yes, this is a a C5 ('03 Z06) that I'm talking about.

Thanks again for the quick responses. :beer

I think I've been Photochopped! :W

Wow what a thread I started!,

So the consensus is -

The ashtray lid automatically opens when the larger door opens and will not shut by itself. The only way to close the ashtray door is to shut the main door on top of it ....?

I thought the ashtray door could shut by itself with the larger door remaining in the open position ?

yes on a 04 C5.

Now I am getting confused again, I thought both of these doors worked independantly from each other???????? Mine does not have this extra lid that closes over the ash tray so I am at a lost here.:confused I am going to research it but again I was under the impression that they worked independantly :confused:confused of each other, the small one is attached directly ;shrug;shrug;shrug to the removal ash tray itself ;help;help;help

1) Correct.

2) No, not unless you remove/disable the ashtray door spring that automatically flips it open.
