I recently bought a '96 LT-4 and I was curious if the experienced drivers turn off the ASR in dry weather or just leave it on all the time. Isn't it a wet weather safety feature?:D :D :D :D

I leave it on all the time with the following exceptions:
1. Autocrossing
2. Burnouts
3. The car next to me just might give me a good run and I don't want any computer hindering the application of max power to the tires.

It's an all-weather, all road safety feature. Besides the rear tires will last longer too.

Thanks, :beer I noticed a big difference in the rain (yes the car is driven in the rain) and I was wondering if there were unwritten laws about its use.

Off all the time for me. I have much better control when it's off.
Funny thing about ASR. Danny Sullivan the Indy car driver test drove a Audi R6 in Autoweek mag. He stated that ASR interrupts what a driver is trying to do with the car when driving agrresively, thereby throwing it out of control. The only time i use it is in snow to take off from a stop.
It amazes me to hear from some that they have much better control with it on even when running autocross events. I'll never understand that. I know for a fact that if the tail end is hanging ten and the ASR kicks in, it flicks the tail wildly sometimes pointing the car in a direction that is not wise.

Off all the time . . .

If you need performance to move through or when pulling into traffic and you get the hesitation ASR induces from wheel spin, it can really cause driving/mobility problems. But I don't drive mine in the rain or snow.

Thanks guys, I like the feel without the ASR engaged. I'm still getting used to the power after 6 years of L-82 automatic.

Havin a ball:w

I just leave it on since that is the default setting.

I agree with Tuna that therer are times when I shut it off.

I can understand why some wont like it on when driving hard since the system does make the car feel funny. Kinda pulses the brakes and stuff.

There is no harm to leave it on.
Just turn it of for "special" occasions :D

So, how many Danny Sullivan-like drivers are there on this forum? I'm surely not. I don't like the suddeness of ASR, but it sure is nice during general driving for sandy or wet spots at intersections. Yes, I turn it off at the drags, but there have been some runs when it would have kept my Vette straighter than my right foot did. I haven't run many autocrosses, but the ones I did were in the rain. ASR helped alot! Annoying, but kept me from spinning out. I felt like I wasn't getting enough acceleration on the straight, but I sure that it was doing just fine, because in the corners it really helped. Also, I won the class at one event. Now, when I get to be as good as Danny S, I'll turn it off in the rain at autox. :L

On almost all the time

I don´t like the way it feels some times but i must say it helped me a lot in some dangerous situations (sand, rain, etc.)

Off like tuna says 1, 2, 3.

My brother´s son took his 92LT1 with 11K for a ride last November, it was raining... ended up in a tree. He is a nice driver but later on he said to me he had turn it off because he did not liked the way it feels.

You don't need to have Danny S. level drving skill to realize it does interrupt and can cause you to lose control in certain instances. It's just common sense.

I keep it on all the time. Only time it comes off is when i feel like doing donuts in the parking lot or squealing the tires alittle, or at a red light with someone next to me i think might want to go... ie "special" occasions. Tuna's #2 and #3.

Otherwise, it is VERY usefull in the rain. I've tried to pass someone at 30-35 mph, and step on it, and the ASR prevented me from spinning my vette all over the road. You just forget.
Also, sand and gravel set it off.

Snow was tricky. I had to turn it off in the parking lot to get going, cause it just wouldn't go anywhere. But turned it back on once i got to the road.

Its always better to have it on just in case... then to get in a situation where you won't have time to turn it on.... or wondered or wished you did have it engaged.

I also leave it off all the time,More control for me, also, dont like the feel of the accelerator pedal been taking over, but In Vegas I only drive in dry weather, so for u wet weather drivers I can unerstand your dilema, after all, that is why the ASR was installed, for wet traction.Would of been nice if they built a feature into the CPM, that it would remember the last function for ASR, so ya wouldnt have to disable every time ya start the vehicle, but anyways, Im sure it helps when needed.:beer

Me personally >>

I leave it on except for those "Special occasions" also..... It doesn't hurt anything and does help inthe rain sometimes...it saved me from spinning out turning onto an on-ramp in the rain...I was trying to beat traffic (because there's always someone, usually in front of me, that tries to merge onto I-95 (70MPH) at 45MPH.) The road was wet and I got into it a little too much before I got straight...I felt the rear starting to kick out but the ASR engaged and kept it straight.

One other time to shut it off is if you have the rear in the air and the car in gear with the engine running. After I installed my transmission I put oil in it and then turned on the car and put it in every gear and let it run in that gear just to lube the thing internally, and the ASR was having fits. I thought the tranny was screwed up at first because it was acting like something was binding, but it then I saw the ASR light flashing on the panel, so when I shut it off it was fine. oops. :)

As always, a varied opinion on this board. I expected that. I like the feel on drive pavement with it off. I am an autocrosser so that is one time it will be off. I just might try it both ways just to see if there is a difference in the time.

Thanks again guys, I'm outta here.:w

Hey Vettart,

Nice thread you have here, it´s always good to know the others experiences. This could be a very good poll!

See you,
George:v

Well, unless your in the situation where your wheels are spinning, the car behaves the same with or without ASR being active.

Actually, my '95 allows the wheels to spin some before the ASR takes over. So even if I take off hard and get a little spin, it's doesn't correct for it unless it lasts a second or two. The time I most notice it is if I forget to turn it off when comparing my car's acceleration to another's and I hit second gear hard. Usually my tires spin, so the ASR bogs me down then.

Dude, search around the Corvette Forum. A guy there built something you can install to disable it automatically when you start the car.

Well from what I'm seeing is that whether it's on or off really depends on the driver and some times weather conditions. For drivers that have full control of thier car, throttle etc, off is the better choice. Those that don't are better off with it on.
There is no right or wrong way.

Thanks, George. Just a question from a newbie to the technology of the C-4.

Thanks again, for all the responses.:w

Vettart-
I can tell you this-Don't ever forget to turn it back on!!!!:eek
ONCE is enough when you forget. I punched it once turning left after a stop. There was water run-off from a yard hose pooled at the stop.
From zero to 65 from a dead stop and the backend spun on me. I caught up to it, but man I'll tell you--I think my hair grew 6 inches!!!!

It would've been fun if I hadn't been watching my life flash before my eyes!

Try it in a very empty and big parking lot sometime.

Now I just keep it on all the time-unless..., the time has come to:Steer
show and GO!!!
