Anyone hear of substituting ATF for GL-4 Trans Oil in a 4+3 4 Speed?

Theory:You won't have dissimilar Fluids in the 4+3.

Both the O.D. & the Manual units will have ATF in them.. No chance of contamination.

Interesting concept.

I have never used ATF but yrs ago I did use 10-40 in a 4 speed manual. in the early 80s the transfer cases on GM 4x4s had atf in them. The 10-40 in the 4 speed made it shift nicer espesially in cold weather. In 20k miles it never hurt it any.;shrug

Would ATF stand up to the pressures between the gear teeth? I have heard of using motor oil as a substitute for gear oil in extremely cold weather or at least a lighter weight gear oil.

My 69 Plymouth Road Runner used SAE 80W-140 in the (then new) Chrysler 4-speed and in the winter time it was pretty hard to shift for the first 5-10 minutes of driving. After the fluid got warm, it wasn't any problem.

The 4-speed should take 75W-90 or straight 80W and that should be thin enough for pretty cold climates. Some people use a synthetic gear oil in the 4-speed portion.

I think I might worry more about metal particles from the 4-speed portion mixing with the ATF in the OD unit if a seal failed. That could screw up the OD internals or possibly the solenoid.

DO NOT put ATF in the gearbox section of the Nash 4+3! If you do, failure of the transmission is certain to occur with the bearings going first.

The gearbox section of that trans is a derivitive of the Warner Super T10 four-speed and is designed for an SAE 90 gear oil.

With the 4+3 use a SAE90 gear lube in the gearbox section and ATF in the overdrive.

Thanx Hib

Someone told me this was recommended by Gordon Kilabrew.

With all due respect to Gordon...he knows a lot about various electronics issues but little about transmissions.

The best lubes for the Doug Nash are Red Line MT90 in the gearbox and Red Line D4 ATF in the O.D.

Thanx again Hib. I'm so glad I posted this.

Just curious, what does that mean? They are separate units.

What happens when the seal goes?

What happens when the seal goes? The OD will have gear oil?

What needs to be rebuilt? Cost?
