1995 Torch Red Hardtop 'vert
I'm working on replacing some gaskets and seals on my '95. I'm spending a lot of time under the car moving stuff out of the way so I can finally get the front cover off.

Last night when I removed the starter it was oil soaked. It really looks like oil is coming from the head gaskets on both sides, but looking closer it seems like it might be higher and just tracking down the joint. It is at the rear of the block on both sides.

Could this be leaking at the rear intake sealant? (I hope)

Pete

When my rear seal went, it sprayed oil on the entire underside of the car! :eek Take a flashlight and look at the back of the intake from the top. If it appears wet, that's the culprit! :)

Thanks for the replies. I already bought the intake gaskets. I definitely have a leak back there.

tred95,

Do yourself a favor and get the block surfaces squeeky clean and dry before you apply the silicone sealant. I use laquer cleaner and a lint free rag. GM's problem with those seals was that they did not remove all oil residue before applying the sealant.

I suggest that you reseat the manifold to the block while the goop is still wet. That way you get good adhesion to both surfaces. I've heard that the orange RTV is best. Takes very high heat and is kind to Oh-two sensors.

Final tip. While the injectors are out you might as well replace the o'rings on those puppies. Look me up if you have problems. I finished mine up last summer. It runs dry as a bone.

As compyelc4 has stated, clean well with acetone (not alcoho). Use GM sealant 12345739, cost is 7.73 from Jeff Kopp. Don't let the local dealer rip you for the suggested 11.79.

Torque right after applying while still wet. Wait 2 days before cranking. I repeat, Wait 2 days before cranking. If you splash oil on it before the 2 day drying time, it will leak again in a few months.

When I did my intake, I laid the intake down and fired it up 2 hours later. No leaks to date and that was over a year ago...

Ted and everyone...

Thanks for your replies. I'm ready to get to that job this weekend.
I won't be starting the car for quite awhile, so the RTV will definitely be cured.

I still have to buy the Opti and the W/P before I'm ready to re-assemble and I'm on a budget right now. I really thought I'd be finished by now but we are taking time off at work (furloughs)
until our business picks up, kind of makes a dent in the checkbook.

Thanks again.

Pete
