I don't know if you have decided on what gear to go with but
I dug up an old email from Justin Abott @ Zip on the 3.73 vs 3.54 gear. Here is a little more detail:
"The 3.54 has a 12 tooth pinion gear where as the
3.73 has a 11 tooth gear. The problem with the dana 36
is that under a lot of torque it will try to flex and the pinion
gear will pull away from the ring gear.
When you install drag radials you increase the amount of force on the rear. When this is multiplied by the 3.73's it tends to split the case."
Unfortunately, or I guess that would be fortunately for me, I don't have any experience with the 3.73 splitting the Dana36 case and haven't seen it firsthand.
