auto tranny-where do i begin?

Just purchased a 71 coupe, 350/270 with TH 400 tranny. The car is incredibly original, never restored, and most sytems are working. When i drove the car, i put it in 3, (or drive) it drives, however, it feels like it's in 2nd, and it will not change gears. If i put it in 2 or 1, it feels like it never changes. 1, 2, 3, all feel like they're running in second. Reverse is fine and so is Park, and the shifter does not shift loosely. Where do i start?

I had a split in my modulator hose at the trans. The symtoms were it wouldn't shift on its own. If I put it in 3 it would stay in 1 but if I put it in 1 and then shift it into 2 it would go into 2 then into 3 it would go into 3.
I guess I was lucky before this happened it would shift fine then all of the sudden it just wouldn't shift on it's own.

my transmission feels like it doesnt go into 1...and when i put it in 3, sometimes it feels like its in neutral and then it feels like it kicks into 3...also...if i park on a hill and put it in park...it starts to roll a little...what could be the problem? :confused

May just need to adjust the shift linkage?

My problem is a cable that tends to freeze in certain spots. it runs from the transmission outside to by the steering column and the firewall. it has to do something with the neutral safety thing or something. the cable clamps onto part of the safety thing and holds it up. im sorry for the unclear explanation, as i do not know the name of this cable or the safety thing and was wondering if anyone could help me with the name of it and where i could find it.:confused

if it is full of atf , dex typ . & vac mod test ok .holds vac & no vac leaks @ mod or mod vac hose ,and no atf comming out mod vac tap . due to split diphgram.. next thing to insp is gov valve and gear . most pos org plasti driven gov gear striped ... if this stuff test ok ,,,,,, prob is inside trans.... gov gear on right side of trans under 4bolt cover , pull cover & insp gear and fluid passages & weights for movement

the cable that i am looking for is called the trans column lock cable for an auto transmission. i looked at ecklers and they are discontinued. does anyone know where i may be able to purchase one at?
