Has anyone tried to convert a C5 automatic car to a 6 speed.
I want to build a low cost C5 race car. I'm looking for a car and auto cars are easy to find. Anything is possible but what is really the difference? OK I need a 6 speed trans (duh) and a bellhousing, and a clutch pedal.
I was planning on a new clutch and flywheel anyhow. So the big question, is the torque tube different? How about the halfshafts?
Will they bolt up to a 6 speed. I think that the auto driveshaft does not have clutch splines, so it would have to be replaced. Will the computer work without automatic trans feedback. Anyone have any knowledge about parts interchangability?? Thanks ;shrug

I see by your info that you have a C4. Was this post meant for that forum? I will move it. ;)

Thanks Ken, I'm interested in a C5 for racing. I edited my question.
You are right. C4, Been there, done that. Time for something new
(and fast).

Wouldn't it be a whole lot easier and cheaper to buy a car with a 6 speed aleady installed from the factory?

It would make life easy to find a 6 speed car. But I'm trying to buy one really cheap, probably with a salvage title, and all I find are automatics.
I have a new plan for racing this time, I'm not using any credit cards, credit lines, 2nd mortgages, etc. This makes it tough trying to finance this out of pocket. It's a whole new outlook.
I have located a couple of salvage cars that would work, but they are auto. What is the ratio of C5 6 speed vs auto?? It must be heavy towards the autos. :hb

HI there,
I would recommend a 99 FRC hardtop, for this subject.
They are plentiful, and can be had for as little as $15k for higher mileage versions.
3.42 rear axle ratio, 6 speed, and light weight. 3175 lbs if memory serves.
Autos had 2.73 or 3.15 rear axle ratios.
Allthebest, c4c5:hb

A 99 FRC would be great, and I agree that at 15K it is really an excellent value. The ones that I have seen in Auto Trader and EBay have been closer to 20.
I can buy a Coupe with an automatic for 5K.
It needs some body work, probably 2K. So now we are at
7000, how much work is it to convert to a 6 speed? 3000?
We could be rolling for 10K. Do you see my motivation:s

On another forum there was a Cartek guy that went from stick to auto. It saved him 50 lbs, got him better times, and made more consistent....plus never has to change the *#$&& clutch again.

Oh yeah, I'm saying to try to find that Cartek guy. Calling Cartek is probably the best route for that info. Julio @ Cartek keeps in touch with that "other" forum.

Thanks, that may be a good contact if someone has done the conversion of 6 to auto, maybe he will have some spare parts. I will follow up on that address.

FWIW; I have read where a wiring harness is different between the two variations (stick & auto). And to do the conversion correctly, the appropriate wiring harness needs to be purchased and swapped in. Butchering the existing harness (again, as I have read) leads to too many problems later.

Question about Z06
been looking to get a Z06 and came across this one for sale: http://www.readytofix.com/Inventory..._Theft_Blue.htm . The problem is that the engine is blown and needs replacement. However, is that the only problem? If so, how much do you guys think it would cost to get it fixed? (I looked up the 04 Z06 LS6..it's for about $7k). Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

17 grand for a z06 w/o engine.

I don't know why I can't make the links work..so heres some information on the car for sale.

Here's a low mileage 2003 ZO6 that was stolen and then recovered by the insurance company. This is an insurance claim settlement vehicle. Known Defects: It was stolen for the purpose of a joy ride. The engine is blown, it will require replacement. Paint, body and interior in excellent condition showing no apparent damage.

I would love to buy that ZO6 with a blown motor. I saw the site last month. I have called the phone number five times. I always get an answering machine with a message that says the voice message box is full, check the web site. The web site has an e-mail address that says we may be to busy to reply.
I will keep trying but I don't have much faith in getting an answer.
Thanks :confused

It all depends on what is wrong with the motor. It'd be easier to find a used motor...probably something like $4000.
