alternator fried again in my vette so i took it off and realized one of the screws stripped out. so i take it back to my local autozone store near my work and go in thinking they will just replace it. so i go in and he looks at it and i show him the screw and tell him it was going crazy 14.6-11.0 on the voltage. he goes look here the case is cracked no way we are replacing it. so after a few choice words he puts it on the check machine and it checks out good and is charging. i proceed to tell him that since the case is cracked the flex is making it do that in my car and not on your machine. we argue some more so i'm like F**k it just give me a new one. well they are out and send me to another store on the other side of town. when i get there i talk to the guys over there and tell them about the other store and proceed to show them whats up. i tell them since the screw came loose (stripped out) thats how the case must of cracked. they say no problem and get a new one with no other questions asked. well the one i had was the cheapest and a year warrenty and this one checks out bad and they don't have another one like that. so i tell them if they got the better one and i'd pay the difference. he finds it and checks good and goes over to the manager and ask how to price out the difference on the register. the manager says don't worry about it and i'll void it out since we don't have the exact replacement. so i walked out with a brand new duralast alternator :D

it's strange how one store to another acts. i was so ****ed at the other store since i usually buy all my parts/oil/stuff like that there and i even told them that. i told the manager at the new store thanks and you got my new business here for good!

Glad it had a happy ending! Guy

Alternator problems suck eh Mic.

I had my share of Alt problems this summer, solved them with a brand new AC Alternator and AC battery.

Voltage now holds steady and no problems.

I have had the same experience with parts stores like this. I quit going to a local autozone for another one like yourself.

Ed, yes it was. the crack was underneath the case and not visable until i removed it. still not holding a good charge at idle. i use the crank pulley and usually it holds around 12.6 but it's been falling to 11.5 or so at idle. i think the batter is alittle drained. been driving it the last 2 days and it holds 14.0-13.6 under load. glad i got a new optima red top battery! voltage been coming up though so hopefully the battery was just alittle drained. last week or so i was down DC for the power ball game getting some tickets and about 20 miles up I95 it read 11.5ish then all the sudden went back up to 13.6 thank god. thats when i knew i had a problem with the alternator.

do you think it could be a serp belt slipping or belt tensioner going bad?? while its running is the arrow on the tensioner between the marks? just something to check?
Ed

When my alternator went bad I had it rebuilt because it was chrome. I just couldn't think about turning it in for a core! Funny thing about it it went bad during the winter! The Summer heat is bad here in Alabama and I always have problems during the Summer. Hell, I see alot of Winter storage questions on these forums, but I am thinking about storing mine for the Summer as the weather during the Winter months were I live never really gets that bad.

no its not slipping. everything is fine. holding 12.6 volts now like it should be with the crank pulley. i never changed the alternator pulley so it spins alittle slower at idle thats why it only holds 12.6 at 1000 rpm it's at 13.6+ like it should be. just needed to drive it some and recharge the battery :D
