Aux Fan and AC Question.

I have an 82. Does anyone know if the electric fan that is on the cars radiator (not the fan blower) suppose to come on when you turn on the AC to Max Cool. I am not sure if the fan is functioning properly or if it works at all. If so where is the fan relay? Not sure if my AC is putting out the best that it can. Reason for my question about the fan is that a mechanic was working on my AC and ask me if my aux radiator fan was working. I didn not know . He said that it was a fan that was related to some of the functioning of the AC system. ???

The electric fan is operated by a temp sensor on the passenger side of the engine. you can test the fan easily enough by unplugging it and supply 12 volts to it. The plug is along the fender well near the compressor. I think the sensor turns on the fan somewhere around 230. What I'm not sure of is if your a/c must also be on.

Thanks for the reply Mr Cool. The mechanic led me to think that it was related to the effeciency of the airconditioning system. I was sceptical about his comment.

the fan should come on when the engine temp is (I think) about 210-215 degrees. doesn't matter if AC is on or off. Another easy way to test fan is to pull 2 wire (blue & black) connector from sensor on passenger side head , near #6 exhaust and jump across terminals. there are lower temp switches available, but it's easy to hook up a manual switch to the wires, and turn on fan when cruising at low speeds.
