Baby's progress continues

I hadn't expected quite this much as the car is pretty solid. But the estimator had concerns about a number of small stress cracks here-and-there. In my ignorance I thought a bit of resin would fill those in but I guess there is more to it than that....

I invite comments on these dollar figures.

Paul, sounds very fair to me - I'd jump at an estimate like that. :)

Thanks Barry and John,
I have consulted a number of other sources and will probably make a decision soon. Here is a typical crack I am speaking of.

I have decided to go ahead with the job and notified the shop late today. I do have some druthers re driving the car next summer in a pristine condition but what the heck. I normally just do cruise days and the like. No further than a $100.00 flatbed ride back home (love those unpredictable Holleys). I polish more than drive. So things are in sync with my 2005 objectives. No more trips to the dragstrip except to watch. I will take pics like Bob (the 327 stays, however) as things proceed. But that will be in a month or so. I don't relish the thought of my 1967 being torn naked but that will have to be to make things right at the far end. Thanks for your thoughts!

I hear you Bob. But with respect I have a tight budget to cling to. Nothing distresses me more than those who start restorations on C2s with good intentions (and unrealistic financial estimates) and give up. I have seen many. And then we see those pathetic, amateur projects for sale on EBay. At inflated prices. I have seen that type of junk at Carlisle. Just blew me away over several years searching before I found a 1967 that was "very close" to what I wanted. And that car is 95% there. I am now going to 98%.

I cannot afford that wonderful restoration you have done. C'est la vie.

Paul,

Let's get something straight. Your '67 is an amazing car that needs nothing to raise its :coolness factor.

Meanwhile, mine is so far from original that certain individuals feel a gag reflex just at the thought of it. :L

Each to his or her own. ;)

So Barry brought up an important thing,

What about whats under the paint, how will that be adressed, I am sorry but if I understand you it a paint removal, then a repaint?

On my car I paid for all paint and primming material directly, they ordered it and I paid for for it directly, granted we painted the bottom side of the car also,we also used a special coating on the bottom to avoid chips.and I have about 1900.00 in paint material's on the car.the clear alone was $300.00 So I think your material price is in check and very afordable,

Your labor rate seems very fair per hour,

Do I understand he is

1-disasembling the car
2-paint stripping
3-adressing what in know as cracks or defects and repairing
4-painting
5-repairing know problems with doors
6-reassembling

warrenting paint for 3 years

questions you should have answers to.

What is the scope of the disasembly,
all chrome and bright work off,
all weather stip removed and replaced with new

What is exspected if hidden repair are found under your paint.Once the paint stripper is into a previous repair it needs to be redone completely

what will get painted? we he disambly the doors enough to repaint the jambs and up into the door itself so you dont see any paint seems or is he going to mask out your doors and leave the excisting paint? Same thing goes for the head lamps buckets and the rear valance and grill area,

I mentioned in a different post we treat our cars as a hobby but its important we treat it as a business deal and fully understand whats being done and whats not being done. We might think it would be criminal to repaint a car with out renwing the weather strip where as your paint shop might think its criminal to replace the weatherstrip because its in such good shape.

Me persoanlly am very detailed in what is exspected from them and me when I make a deal this way there are no misunderstanding,

MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS

Good luck

It seems that I have hijacked Barry's thread....sorry Barry.

IH2LOSE,
I have followed your earlier messages with great interest and have attempted to cover my b*** in the draft contract that is being drawn up. I have similarly tried to anticipate the "smaller" hardware needs (and purchased them) that will expedite the job. It's not just as if you can go to the local hardware store for parts for a 38-year-old car. As to whether the car will be dis-assembled I do not know. But here is the essence (in point form) of what has been agreed on:

-doors off, dis-assembled, locking systems repaired, door pulls replaced, passenger side mirror installed (correct Bowtie and reinforcement, gaskets, etc. from a major vendor), door pins and bushings available if needed
-jambs to be painted
-SB hood off, painted
-BB hood, painted, black on green, stinger stencil provided, shims available
-grille out
-bumpers off, bolt kits supplied by me, re-chromed bumpers for front (in the basement now), rear bumpers are fine
-emblems (only two on 1967) replaced
-rear exhaust valence off, to gain access to rear emblem and some cracks to be repaired, new bezels to go on
-I have new weatherstripping

The 10% contingency I mentioned earlier is for "surprises" when the old paint is removed. I suspect the estimator has built one (unstated) in as well.

Bob,
I agree with you totally: to each his own. I pondered leaving the paint as is and putting a little more pizzazz under the hood as well as replacing the Powerglide with a 200-R4. But after some navel-gazing as to my needs I pulled a Dr. Phil on myself (What were you thinking?). The fact of the matter is that I use the car for Sunday afternoon fair-weather drives and cruise events. And I tinker/clean more than drive actually. So the 327/300 is more than adequate for those purposes. So the savings account will be used for cosmetic objectives.
