Hey folks, I have a question about the numbers found on the metal plate in the drivers side door jamb. They don't seem to match up with anything that I can find in reference material. Any help decoding these:
B 08A 108129 641 741 YUU E

Thanks for the help. I'm just getting started with my first Vette and I have already avoided a few pitfalls thanks to this forum.
Chris

I think what you're looking at is what's called the "trim tag" and the letters & numbers refer to what options were ordered on your Vette. In order to decode these number, you'll have to post the year of your car. The trim tag has the paint code, interior colour and material (ie: leather vs cloth vs vinyl) and some such.

edit: I just noticed your car is a 1981. I don't have those codes but someone will or we can search them out for you.

Chris, here's a link to the codes for your Vette.... Tech Center

Hey Mac, Thanks for the reply. I looked at that page before I posted my question and if you check the numbers in my original post they don't seem to have any matches on that reference page. ???:confused Hence my quandry!

I only flashed across them quickly; I didn't take the time to compare. No matches, hm? How bizarre!! I wonder if one of our resident 1981 experts want to take a crack at this one? Rare81??

I can help with some of it.

B= Bowling Green ass'y plant
08= August
A= 1st week of the month
108129= ?? VIN derivative?
641= Camel leather interior
741= ?? sure it's not 74L? could be dark bronze exterior paint, lower half of car
YUU=?? should be two digits, plus a 'U' for 'U' pper body colour

:beer

Wow, thanks Mike! You ROCK! :_rock That's a big step in the right direction. I'll double check those last two numbers and get back. Where did you find that info? I can't seem to find it listed anywhere.
Thanks again, Chris

OK I'm impressed. You were exactly right. The numbers were the last six of the vin, it was 74L and Y4U. The car is all one color now though. I guess it must have been painted at some point. If it was originally two tone paint, where was the demarcation between upper and lower colors.

OK, but why the different character in the second color code? 74L vs. Y4U? Just curious.

Actually it's a really strange character I call it a Y but it is more like an italicY

I'll check again in the morning. My eyes are crossing up. I swear since I brought this car home last Sat. I have been up until 1 or 2 every night reading and researching. I think I got the bug!

My 78 is a silver anniversary with two-tone paint and the seperation of the two colors comes at the mid line of the car. You should be able to see where the center of the door is raised horizontally and also along the nose and tail you should be able to determine where the midline is. The lower color also comes over the wheel wells of the fenders just a bit.
It seems mostly eyeball-ed to me, but I think my 78 Assembly Manual has measurements as guidelines.
