Basig easy and cheap tuning. What to do ?

Hello to you all.

I am very close to finish a deal, where I will get my first Vette.
It is a 1990 with automatic transmission.

The owner says it has 375HP, but I am not so sure about that.
To me it looked pretty original.

But. As I am new to Corvette, I would like to know, how I can modifie the car, to get more HP, more Topspeed and what ever.

The car is in Russia at the moment, where I also am, but it will return with me, to Europe in some months.

Repairs and Tuning is low cost here, so I would like to know, if I should try somethings.

I will be gratefull for every help I can get.

Thanks
Morten

Hi Morten,

I would first do a full service tune up on all the fluids, oils, plugs, etc... and then go from there.

There's the intake, exhaust, heads, headers, cam swap that most people typically do. Then you'll have to get a chip to go with that.

You could build a stroker motor, put a mini-ram in there or even do something like a supercharger or some other form of forced induction.

The possibilities are only limited to your wallet.:D

Are the shops good over there? good enough to do head and intake work? I am assuming tuning is cheap because labor is cheap... You can port/polish the heads and intake to pick up a good amount of power. In the states this work is costly because it is labor intensive, there I assume the cost would be much lower.

Great that there are some answers already, but ..
Can anyone explain this a little more detailed, or perhaps give me some internet adresses, where things like this is well explained?

One more thing. Should there be an engine number on the block ?
If yes, where can I find it ?
A picture would be great.

Thanks in advance
Morten

Bud I think I saw that car in a picture you posted a while ago.

Forget about modifing the car. Start repairing it! You could have a very nice car soon so my suggestion is don't destroy it further.

I mean if you need a new coil throw a performance one in. If you need a new set of valve covers ya throw some chrome ones on. But do it by piece work for things you actually need. You will be surpized how fast your car will change for the better.

BTW From the picture and what I can gather that car is no where near 345Hp. More like 240-260. Which is good enough for less than 6 second zero to sixty times, under 14 second quarter miles, and over 150 MPH......So how fast did you need to go anyways?

Summary: Buy the car, make it look GOOD, and after your done and its no longer just a car but your own personalized work of art then decide on performance modifications.

Hi BigRed.

The things you talk about, is already planned.

I will make a lot of special design in the engine area, as well as under the car, but I would stil like to get some knowledge.

I have never before worked with US cars and V8.

Most of my experience is by Japan Motorbikes. High performance engines.

And some knowledge of repairing normal cars.

But thanks Bud

Morten

Btw: should get the Vette in a week :J

Moscowbo! Go to c4vettes.com and read up on the performance mods section. Mainly, go with a hyperchip, free-flow exuast, K&N filter with vented air-box cap and, if you feel up to it, remove the Mass Air Flow screens either side of your sensor but be very careful you don't touch the sensor wire inside. This will give you about a 75-85 HP boost without serious engine mods, for a few hundred bucks. RJS:beer
