battery light problem

1982 goes back a long way for me, but if I remember that alternator correctly it is a bad trio that is located inside the alternator.

100% correct - Diode Trio is bad, inexpensive and easy to change

That's right, diode trio. Been a long time. It bridges the rectifier to the regulator. I like your sig about idiotproof, no truer statement.

I have the same condition. I have purchased a diode trio. Any tricks to installation. I have not disassembled an alt. I read the shop manual but would like some advice...Thanks

Doing a rebuild of an SI series alternator is pretty straight forward as long as you have the book.

When you get it apart, considering the alternator's age and that your going to replace the diodes, look at the bearings, if they're dried out, I'd replace the rear unit. Also, look at the slip rings. If they're badly grooved, I'd skip the diode replacement and go buy a reman.

Denso has a good line of reman alternators.
