...I'm looking for someone who's had a similar experience.

Apply the brakes and the front turn signals both come on, along with the four brake lights.....AND.....the dome light flashes!!!! :eek However, opening or closing the doors has no effect on the dome light. It's off except as noted above.

Also, the four-way and the regular signal lights don't work.

Headlights (hi and low), taillights and dash lights all work fine.

Every wiring harness in the car is new except for the column harness and signal switch. Gee, do you think???? :eyerole

The stuff that works is all independent of the turn signal switch - all those circuits are fed directly from the headlight switch. Re-check the colors and terminals of all the wires in the curved connector at the steering column that joins the turn signal switch and the instrument panel harness; the problem has to be either in that connector or in the turn signal switch, as everything that's gone funky is controlled through that switch (except the flashing dome light - do the courtesy lights at the ends of the dash also flash with the dome light?).

I just played hookey long enough to run out to the garage.

I took the column connector apart and then reconnected it. Some of the problem must have been there because I now have left and right signals (although left is very fast, right is the proper speed). The dome light no longer flashes, nor do the courtesy lights -- I didn't notice if the courtesy lights were flashing before.

I still have no 4-way flasher. I installed another flasher, in place of the new one, with no improvement.

I'll look it all over again this evening. Thanks John.

After re-checking connections and bulb seating, I'm down to all interior/exterior lights/signals/brake lights working properly except for the dome and courtesy and the 4-way flasher.

Opening the doors and/or turning the dome switch does not bring them on.

on most cars the dome/courtesy lights are wired so the power goes to the bulbs and the switch is to the ground; your door switches and when you turn your dimmer all the way on it grounds out the dome light circut so power flows, on my 76 it is a white wire and is hot(powered).

I tried to explain ground switched circuits to a guy the other day and got a blank look. "Why would you want to switch ground?"

I don't see what's so difficult to understand. Ground is everywhere and rather than push power into the door switches, they push it directly to the bulb. Works for me! Older cars are sooooo much easier than the new ones. No microprocessers, no "time-out" circuit, no trouble codes, no (or very few) special tools required to troubleshoot, just a 12v lamp and some patience.

With my fancy newly-painted door jambs, there's probably no way the courtesy lamp switches can capture ground. I'll use a lighter.

there should be a black wire also (ground) which serves the same purpose, Our Corvettes being fiberglass require more feet of wire then steel cars. the door switch should have two connectors on it.

On the dome light circuit, orange is the power wire, also used for the cig lighter, and the white wire is the switched ground. check the orange for 12 volts, and you can ground the white to see if bulbs are good.
