on speed week they had rusty wallace and mobil 1 oil. he said no more 50 weight. 30 weight max and now some are even running new 0 weight. he mentioned the cup cars 9,000 rpm and heat but no appreciable wear nor damage and less friction because of mobil 1 newer technology. well it occured to me that 87-91 was a long time ago. should we rethink 15-50 weight?

Over here (UK) the standard Mobil 1 is 0w40 though I have no trouble finding Mobil1 15w50 as it's quite widely available.

Because of the amount of work Callaway put into their engine design and construction I'd say they specified 15w50 for a reason. Especially as they have specifically chosen a weight that's so different from the standard vette (5w30). Remember Callaway's engines had different clearances to stock.

I'd just follow their recommendations.

Mobil1's site shows 15w50 still in the product lineup, Wonder why R.Wallace said no more??

I will continue to run 15w50. Unless your engine is rebuilt to different tolerances I wouldn't stop using it any time soon. The thicker 15w50 adds a cush factor to the bearing, which is important with the type of loads (torque) our twin turbos make.

Total race engines, just have to last the duration of the race. After the race, these engines are torn down and rebuilt with new brearing etc. Special attention to detail is done to ensure all the tolerances are perfect, along with the use of the latest and greatest high dollar materials.

Yes, i would say that the guys recommending no change are correct. The ONLY reason I would ever change, and its a slim chance on this, is if I lived somewhere it was "0" deg F, the car sat outside and got to that temperature, and I was forced to drive it to work because I had no other car, and added to the fact that I would never race or get on the car.

Like I said... Slim.... but I would probably use 10-30 then, just to get it through the winter very slowly.

Stick with the 15-50 mobil... Some Red Line oil is probably just fine too in the same weight.

they use 0W-30 in restrictor plate race engines that turn about 7000 rpm because they gain HP over the heavier oils,but in the 9000+ rpm open engines they do not use it. they use 0W-10 in restrictor plate qualifing with 25/30 # of oil pressure. it has been several years since i have been in the pits at a NASCAR race but that was what i saw then.
