Belts and Pulleys

After a close inspection of the engine compartment in preparation for the motor removal tommorow, I noticed the fan belts are offset. Seems that the water pump may be at fault. Did the 81's use a short or long pump? I noted that the back of this pump touches the timing cover. I have nothing to compare it to but I always thought the length was in the shaft not at the water inlet and outlet side.

Can anyone help here?

I'm not sitting in front of the car right now, but I know there is 3/4 - 1 inch of space between the pump and the timing cover on my '78.
