If you're so inclined, the best place to do it is on your own workbench. Grab a video, get organized, and you can do it yourself.... especially because it worked fine before you pulled it (assumption). Chances are that your gears are fine and the other major components are OK. You should replace bearings, synchros, countershaft, and other misc wear items. And you should check forks, sliders, hubs, and gears for excessive wear.
That's what I did and it was a very rewarding project. The most complicated thing I used was a snap-ring pliers ... oh yeah and a small torch. The only thing one might need is a press to get the speedo drive gear off but you could quickly and easily bring it to a shop.
I ended replacing everything but the mainshaft,the main case, hubs, side cover, and the reverse gears but I got my POS Muncie off EBAY and it was trashed.
Price $230 on up. I say $230 becuase a kit will run you about $130 and I'd allow $100 for parts like sliders and forks.
If you're gears are toast, it's a whole different story. But... since you weren't having any problems, I wouldn't worry.
