best radar detector

I wouldn't spend any money on what I saw on that page. I would still go with the V1. As to jammers, active jammers are illegal, passive jammers just plain don't work.

I've had whistlers in all my cars for several years, with no problems, and very early detection of police radar - over hills, around long turns, etc.
I get the units that have remote antennaes and mount one in the front and another in the rear - with the receiver under the dash pad near the soeedo.
The whistler also has a vg2 detection mode which causes it to go silent when a vg2 is detected - if that option is selected.

Valentine 1 here, it picks up x-band, k-band, ka-band, and laser. Plus it also lets you know the direction it's coming from front, side, or rear. In addition to the above mentioned it also lets you know how many radar units are locked on to you. 84 CF 91-ZR1

I've tried many and by far the best one is what I have currently, and that's the Valentine One. It has far superior range than the other ones I've tried, plus the direction arrows really help.

The direction indicator REALLY saved my butt one day. I was on interstate 95 and was doing about 80. I started getting a Ka signal so I slowed to ~70. Well, the Jaguar behind me was getting all bent out of shape because I was trying to get into the slow lane but there was a truck. By this time the Valentine was pegged so I didn't want to speed up too much to get over. After a 1/2 mile or so I finally got in front of the truck and the Jaguar came flying by. Well, as we went under this bridge (I hadn't seen any cops to this point) the direction arrows went to the side, and then behind as I passed the bridge and the signal started going away. I never saw a cop. Suddenly the signal started pegging again to the rear so I looked in my rear view and flying down the on-ramp coming up from behind was a State Trooper Camaro. He actually almost crashed into me because he was going easily over 100MPH and trying to thread in between me and the truck behind me (both going 70) but there wasn't enough room and he was going way too fast but I cut over in time onto the shoulder and he managed to keep it on the road as he went around me in the lane. A few miles up the road I saw the Jaguar pulled over along with 3 other cars by other Troopers.

So actually, it wasn't a ticket that I was saved from so much, but a bad accident from this reckless Highway patrol officer being a hypocrite in his new Camaro. Because I would have never seen him coming except that the Valentine let me know the there was a strong radar from behind and that was the only reason I was looking there.

No doubt about it....V1. I've had mine for a while now and it has saved me many times. Far, faaaaaaaar superior to others I have tried. Plus, all V1's are upgradeable as new technology emerges...go for it!

I have asked this question before and you've told me valentine1 is the best radar. Right before i was about to order my own I came across this review, and it cast some doubt and i held off. http://www.radardetectorauthority.org/radar/r/magnet/radar_detector_review_16.htm ... So to everyone that owns a radar det or has tried the many that is out there.. what is the best radar detector on the market today? My money goes to what you recommend!

Read this report before you purchase ANY detecton system!!!

http://www.speedzones.com/index.htm

This is an impartial report. You will find out that soon there won't be any detector that will work!!!

If you're referring to the B3 "POP" radar, it's true that the conventional radar detectors probably won't detect it unless that guy switches to the instant on to lock a speed.

But as was stated, the Valentine One is upgradeble, and the DSP it uses can be programmed to watch 33.8GHz with priority. If this is the case, 67mS suddenly becomes awfully slow in electrical terms. They're bragging about 67mS being too quick to detect, but if the police radar receiver can detect it, then so can a radar detector that's looking for it.

errrrrrrrrr, I ordered and I just got my own V1 today, plug it in, turn the switch, nothing happens, i get out and try it on 3 other cars. It doesnt work! this has me depressed, do you have to get any special adapters or anything :(

Did you have the key in the "ON" position? Many cars will disable the cigarette lighter when the car is off.

whoohoo i got to work! Turned out it was super rusty inside, i cleaned it out as best as i could and it works, but now i cant go test it out because its raining hell outside :(

The V-1 is absolutely the best detector on the market, and if technology improves, the V-1 can be upgraded, instead of throwing the detector away like the owners of all other brands would be doing! I've tried the rest, I own the best.:beer

Some notes from my research about the Valentine One versus other radar detectors...

1) Unlike all the other detectors, the V1 is only sold directly by Valentine itself. This really ticks off radar detector distributors, and you will find that just about every distributor either writes bad reviews about the V1 or downplays it. Their position is heavily biased because the V1 competes with the detectors they can sell.

2) It is interesting to note that every radar detector review compares against the V1. And often almost exclusively.

3) It is very clear that politics and money play a large role in virtually all of the detector reviews I've examined. Finding (relatively) unbiased comparison information is difficult.

4) Radar detector comparisons are fraught with fanaticism from owners. Again making unbiased comparison information difficult to find.

5) The V1 has two antennas (one forward, one rear). The other detectors have one antenna (forward). This gives the V1 increased sensitivity (particularly toward the rear) and it's direction indication abilities.

6) The V1 is black and subdued looking. I thought it looked very ugly in the advertisements for it, but in real life, it looks much better. It disappears against my black interior easily. Many other radar detectors are more stylish and typically come only in bright colors. They definately win on style points. But they really stick out against the interior of your car.

7) The Escort is also a very good detector for about $100 less. The forward direction sensitivity of the Escort seems to be very close to the V1 (they're probably both using the same antenna components, I'll bet). The rear and side sensitivity of the V1 is way better than everything else since it's essentually in a different class all its own there with the rear facing antenna.

8) The V1 does not have auto mute. And it has no excuse to not have it, either. I wish it did. (Auto mute is where it drops its volume down to a quieter level after a couple of seconds to get your attention)

9) The most objective comparisons seem to put the V1 and Escort very close to eachother. The V1, with its twin antennas, is a little more sensitive. The Escort is a little less prone to false alarms. So if you want to be more twitchy and take less risk of tickets, the V1 will suit a little better. If you want to be bothered for no reason less, the Escort will suit a little better.

10) The V1's detection range is almost too good. You often never actually see the police car because you detected them from several blocks away on a different street entirely. I often detect police radar about a minute or two before passing them. This is good protection against 'instant on' radar, because you're very likely to pick up short blips during that long time as cars ahead of you are hit.

11) The cheap $100 or so detectors provide very little advanced warning. Often only a second or two before you're hit. Particularly for modern Ka band radar. My cheap Cobra detector wasn't getting much of a reading even while I watched the radar gun pointed right at me at close range. That's what convinced me to replace it.

12) Police radar makes occasional advances. Radar detectors advance to keep up with it. 'Impossible to detect' has never stayed impossible for long. V1 has a good upgrade policy. Some of the other detectors do, too. It's worth looking up those policies when making the comparison because it will eventually matter.

13) You wouldn't go wrong with either a V1 or an Escort. They're both very fine detectors.

There... more information than you ever wanted to hear. Obviously, I'm a V1 owner. I've tried to be unbiased and factual with my information above. But I'm still biased. Draw your own conclusions.

I've been using the Escort 8500 for a couple years now with no problems what so ever. I love it. It seems to be very acurate........heck, knock on wood but I'm ticket free so far

Have had Escorts for years (all models as they improved) but just bought a Valentine 1. I like the fact they will upgrade as technology changes, which Escort wont. Just used the V1 on trip from Vegas to Newport Beach and it has so many more features than th EScort and so far much better overall.

V1 expensive to start with but considering the upgrades available I think in long run it will be cheaper. Plus the features are better.

My 2 cents!!

The 8500 and V1 are very similar in performance, and it really comes down to what a particular person is using, thats what they tend to like. I have used a V1 and 8500, and currently have the 8500 in my vette. The differences between them are very small if any. The V1 has side detection, but you will never be "clocked" from the side, only the front or back. Some people really rave about the V1's direction indicator but to me its not that big of a deal.

Both the V1 and 8500 are upgradable, and I think Valentine charges more for upgrades. If you're looking for a performance difference I doubt you'll find one (not a noticeable one). If you're looking for bells and whisltes, the V1 probably gets the edge. Truth is they are both great detectors. The 8500 is about $100 less than the V1. I got mine for $269, free shipping.

It may be a little late to weigh in on this one, but here's one more vote for the Valentine One. It's well worth its hefty price tag and has paid for itself many times over. The dual antennas are a great feature!

The only complaint that I have is its sensitivity to the signals being emitted by the cheap detectors. That can be a real nuisance when you're running in traffic and someone comes up behind you with a $99 Radio Shack special. In a non-perfect world, I guess it's better to be too sensitive than the other alternative.

BTW....has anyone come up with a good mount or mounting arrangement? I hate the suction cups. I know that one of the catalogs offers a "universal" mount that suspends the unit below the mirror. Has anyone tried this with the Valentine?

I just built one and will try to get some pics. I had bought one of those from Mid America and for the money I sent it back. Turned out all I needed was a 10/32 threaded rod from Home Depot and a piece of brass tubing from a hobby store.

Can we agree to disagree

While I have no doubt the V1 is a fine detector, I don't really buy into the upgradeable crap. If the software was the only thing that improves maybe it would be true. I doubt that is the case. As the first pop for anything serious here in PA is about $300, and that is the price of a new 8500 it is little enough to pay every couple of years.
