As some of you might know...I plan on buying a BB GM Crate Motor from GMPP in the near future. What are my shipping options here? Can I use an indepentent shipper thru GMPP and does anyone have any suggestions on using a particular carrier?

Who's got the best rates?:confused

Mark,

I'm not sure how GMPP works, but apparently only some GM dealers are GMPP approved. Can you not take delivery through one of those dealers in your area at no additional delivery cost? :confused

You can search for one by ZIP code.

I think they add frieght from GMPP to the dealer. I thought maybe I could have GMPP direct ship it to my home direct rather then have to trasport it from the dealer. Moving a 400lb + pound motor from the dealer to me seems like extra work. I thought I could save some shipping chrgs if I have my own carrier pick it up and ship it to me from GMPP.

I think the first thing to do would be to contact a GMPP dealer as you suggested. I thought maybe some one here as been thru this excersize already..:beer

I have had some bare small blocks shipped to me this way (about 200#s) by truck freight. If I remember correctly they charge extra for delivery to a residential area and also for a truck with a hydraulic lift. Plus you may have to sit around and wait for the truck to show up. It pays to shop around and some carriers have web sites where you can check the rates yourself. Be sure to check if it is delivered to your door or to their nearest depot when checking rates online. Some truck companies seem to have better rates in certain geographic locations than in others. You should check out the popular carriers in your area. Good luck.

The cheapest way is to have it shipped to your local freight terminal, then you go pick it up. Most expensive is to have is shipped to your door.

My neighbor recently bought a 68 327 long block on EBAY. Had it shipped from Chicago to the terminal in Baltimore. Cost was about $300.00 as I recall. Chuck

Shipping

Forward Air charges $42.00 per #100, so for terminal to terminal delivert anywhere in the US you could get it shipped for 160-200 dollars. They will unload and load n/c. G.

VNV - I live in NYC and shopped my 502/502 all over last year - finally bought through GMpartsdirect.com - a little weird in that you don't get to talk to anyone (at all - all done over internet) - anyway shipping charge to Long Island was $160 - the trick here was to intercept the shipment from the big trucking company to the little local guy that they were going to pass it off to deliver it to the gas station (they would only deliver to a "commercial establishment") - just find out who is handling that part, offer them another $40 - $50 and voila, its delivered to your home garage - email me if you have any questions on this or the swap - are you going 572, 502 or 454HO?

Very Interesting.....I will drop you a email with in the next day or two to get the fine details. I do know a place with a commercial address that I can have it shipped too.

I am going with the new version of the 454...which is the "454/440" HP With aluminium heads and intake. My Keisler 5 speed tranny is only rated to 475 HP. 440 hp is enough ummpppp for me.

Here's the Link to the GMPP Motor page.
