Help! How is the best way to install new trunk weather stripping on 1961 vette?

for my 1960......

for my 1960, I bought the black 3M weatherstrip adhesive, 08008 and used it.

1. take some paint masking tape (I use the green stuff) and outlined where the brackets mate up to the deck lid so that when I go to put the deck lid back on I get in in the right place.

2. Get a helper to hold the lid as you remove the bolts that hold the deck lid to the hinges. Any shims that are used, keep them on the side they came from so you can put them back in.

3. went to the bedroom set the decklid top down on the bed and applied the black gunk a bit at a time, usually 4 to 6 inches following the directions from 3M. By putting it on the bed, I could sit in one place and turn the deck lid on top of the bed. I usually get a chair and sit next to the side of the bed while I turn the deck lid. In my case I used my finger to smooth and spread (yup it makes a mess of your finger).

4. put deck lid back on car with helper to hold in place while I replace shims and bolts

Did you need to put masking tape over the weatherstrip as you applied it to hold it in place or does it stick and stay on contact?

I assume you did this when your wife was out shopping.

no masking tape required, it gets tacky quite fast, that is why you are good for 4 to 6 inches.....

and she held the door for me to take the deck lid into the house and bedroom as well as getting it back out. If you get black stuff on anything, this privilege goes out the door in a nano-second!

I have done it a couple of times on the bed....so far the car parts are still welcomed into the bedroom!:chuckle

Be sure to wipe down the new weatherstrip with denatured alcohol to remove the mold-release residue from the rubber, or the adhesive won't "stick" as it should.

John,
Will a quick wipe of lac thinner work for prepping the surface and weatherstripping?
Thanks

I prefer alcohol for this application on rubber, as it doesn't contain petroleum distillates (toluene) that can also affect adhesion.

I finished weather stripping today. Everything when together as planned and looks good. Thanks for all the help Herb/Firstgear. Ace:D
