Is there an easy way to remove the dash bezels for painting without removing the dash ? I thought I could just tape them off but that didnt work!

Are you referring to the instrument cluster area?

If so, the rings surrounding the instruments are not removeable. They are part of the instrument cluster casting.

Thanks 67heaven - anybody have a good way to paint those or is a brush the only way to get at them?

As 67 says, they are part of the housing, not removable, and were originally chrome plated (assuming you're talkning about the bezels or 'rings' surrounding the speedo, tach, and 4 small gages). The only way I know to properly do them is to send the cluster in to one of the services & have it restored, they will replate the chrome if necessary, I would assume. Otherwise, I guess you could paint the rings with chrome paint, not too sure how well this would look or would hold up. I'd prefer leaving them as is if I didn't want to have it restored. Your call.

Interesting . . . I just assumed the silver paint on mine was stock . . alot of it flaked off when I taped the bezels to paint the dash . . maybe I"ll just remove the rest . . . is the clock bezel factory painted?

We masked the "chrome" areas on the lip of the bezels, as well as the words at the switches, with a liquid product called Maskol by Humbrol. This purple/pink liquid comes in a very small bottle and is available at hobby stores.

You apply it with a small artist's brush and it dries to a continuous piece. After the spray on paint (I used Krylon Semi-Flat) dries, just pull off the Maskol. Amazing!

It's available in countries belonging to the British Commonwealth. I don't know about the U.S.A., but you'll have something similar.

Nope, the rim of the clock bezel was chrome plated, the same as the rims of the speedo, tach, & other gages, as is shown in 67's photos.

As Ron Miller said the rims are chrome the rest of the bezel is actually frosted. I think after '64 the entire bezel was chrome. As you found out for some reason GM frosted over all but the rim on '64s. My rims were in good shape chrome wise and the rest was flacking off as yours is. I made a templet for the cluster and applied a small amount of vasoline to the rim. After I frosted the bezels the vasoline just wipes rght off to show the good chrome.
