Hi, need some help here. going to look at a 76 tonight. priced right i think. can someone tell me how to check for rust in birdcage area. thanks, john

The easy areas to look at are the 2 cowl vent covers. They are held in place with 1 philips head screw. When uncovered you will see the forward support posts of the birdcage. If there is a lot of rust here , I'd walk away.

The other area which is a bit more difficult, is the access cover to the rear part of the birdcage. You'll need to remove the back wheels. Then you'll see an access panel held on by 4 screws.
Remove this panel and with a flashlight look inside. Again if there is a lot of rust, walk away unless you plan to do a frame off.

Another trick is to slide a business card under the windshield molding and see if any rust drops out.

Good Luck

i looked at the car today. not sure what to think. interior weas trashed. sagging rear end. recently painted ? not very well. wet spots underneath. frame seemed solid although i did see a few fixes in floorpan. is this what i can expect for under 5000?
