78 Pace Car imposter
It's been a busy week. I have been doing some minor stuff on the imposter. I removed the stock air cleaner and put in one of those chrome units with the 360 degree paper filter in the middle. It looks like a chrome cookie. :-) I can feel a differnce in how she breathes now. I need to find a plug for the starboard valve cover so I can remove that metal tube / rubber hose that ran into the back of the air cleaner. I also plugged off the rubber tube that ran to the back of the air cleaner. I am assuming that is all smog control stuff.

I have begun working on the problem of the reverse lockout not working. I removed everything to expose the bottom of the shifter. Just removing the sides, as was suggested, didn't do it. I found that the woodruff key in the shift handle was broken off. MPE can't order a new one, so I will check with a buddy of mine who is a machinist. Maybe I can convince him to make one for me.

While I had the console torn apart, I began looking at the heater switch. I found two "towers" that the switch screws into were broken off. I am trying JB Weld to put them back together. If anyone has a good heater/AC face plate to sell, let me know while I have this all apart.

I found that a PO did not use the proper screws to put the shifter boot in. I found of the clips that the screws go into. Maybe MPE can get 3 more of those for me. I already have an interior screw set, so I have the proper screws.

I am trying to sell the car, so the more I can remove "negotiation points", the better. I still have that noise in the rear end. I have replaced the rear calipers, and the wheel bearings and u-joints for the left rear. The ones on the right rear I was told are OK. So, I can deduce that it is either the rear end itself, or the emergency brake stuff. The EB doesn't work, so I am suspecting it. The noise seems to comes on after it has been driven around a while. It sounds like something binding.

I also noticed something else strange. After I took the console off, I noticed a cable that looks just like a speedometer cable. The speedometer and tach both work just fine. I would think it unusual to put in a new speedo cable and leave the old one in place. Any ideas what it might be?

I found another unusual bit. There is a cable with a plug on the end. The plug has a cap on it. When I remove the cap. I find a "male" plug with half a dozen small rods in it. They form the shape of a half circle. Could that be left over stuff from the security system which doesn't work on this car? In fact, I can't find anything that would suggest that it has, or has ever had, a security system in it. The plug is about 1 in in diameter.

Every trip into the bowels of the beast is a learning experience. :hb

Don't plug the hole in the valve cover, that's part of the PCV system. Works like a vacuum. Put a breather in the hole or run a hose to the air cleaner bottom. Did it come with an attachment for that?
Are you sure the cable in the console isn't just the antenna cable?
The cable with the plug on the end sounds like a stereo component. Former owners amp lead?

After a bit more thinking about it, I decided that the connections (the speedo-like and the one with the pins) were for the cb radio (which is not there). It makes sense. I need to find a breather cap to replace that tube on the passenger valve cover. Any thoughts?

your best bet on the breather is to run a hose into the new aircleaner. the aftermarket air cleaners usually have a black plastic fitting that can be installed into the air cleaner base. most people throw them away. you won't gain any power by not having it connected. if you don't want to connect it, measure the diameter of the breather grommet, and go to Pep Boys, in their "performance" section, they usually carry quite a few that will work.

I will swing by AutoZone on the way home. I just think it looks more "old school" without that tube running into the air cleaner
