Blackwing or K&N Dual Filter Kit

You really need a cold air induction.

The black wing is excellent, if you like hot motor compartment air.

The dual cone set up is 2 air filters leading to 3" tubes leading to a 3" tube....creates turbulance like 2 Fat guys trying to fit through a door.

I had a customer in a 01 Auto coupe pick up 21rwhp with only installing Cyclone Induction. That is a great pick up the average car will get 12-15.

Just my 2 cents

Two of the best bangs for the dollar so far that we've found are the Blackwing (on sale now for $199) and the K&N FIPK (available for all years of LS1 and LS6).

I'm thinking of getting the Blackwing for my 02 coupe. Will I have to do the idle re-learn after the install? Is it truly a bolt on easy install and can I go back to the stock set-up if need be?
Thanks to all. This is without a doubt the best forum out there.

Let's end this war quickly and get our boys back home safe.
Peace to all.

No, you will not have to do the idle relearn.

Yes, it truly is a bolt-on and yes you can go back to stock any time you want.

Just finished the test drive after installing the Blackwing - DEFINITE difference, SOTP tells me the revs come up quicker with the the free flow filter as well as a boost in power.

nice kit - The Blackwing fit & finish are excellent, and the install took me 10 minutes.

After seeing the inside of the stock air box & that wimpy paper filter, i am thrilled with this mod. Thanks to all those who responded with adive, and UpFront Technologies for the reasonable price and quick delivery.

blackwing vs vortex

the blackwing is definitely better than stock or k&n but how does it compare to the Vortex? Is water entering system from road a problem with the Vortex?

Irish,
I've had the
vortex for over a year and I am a daily driver and have never had a water problem. I don't go thru any deep standing water.

I think the 2002 or later Z06 airbox cover is the best bang for the $ ($48). It improves hp and sound. If you are under 405 hp, it will do great, dyno proven. Plus its OEM and designed for no water ingestion problems.

Re: cyclone ???

Mongoose stated a "Cyclone" worked well - what is a "Cyclone"

Cyclone is our induction system that has shown gains of 21rwhp on a 01 Coupe w/3.15.

It is a better bottom feeder than the others on the market because of filter quality and ease of installation (although not as easy as the Blackwing). Plus it the only System to come with a $1000 Hydrolock Guarantee. We have removed Blackwings, Vortex, Vararam, and way too many dual cones to replace it with the Cyclone and not one person has not said to feel a differance.

Thanks
Brian

PS. I am inquiring to become a forum vendor on the site. Hopefully it goes through fairly quickly so we can get you guys some killer deals.

At Ptech we have tested both systems. Evaluated were fit, ease of installation, quality and actual rwhp gains. The verdict is in, the SLP system wins hands down. We used to recommend the KN system, we now go with the Blackwing.

I also have the Blackwing and like it. Has anyone tried the West Coast Corvette Cold Air Screens or ZO6 screens with the Blackwing and does THAT make any difference as far as cold air goes? I still hate to cut the shroud, and I am worried about water. And does that aftermarket performance hood seal do anything worthwhile, and if it does ,why doesn't GM include it?

Don't know if anyone has done any oil analysis on the K&N, but they usually don't fare too well on the silicon they let through the filter.

I suggest either the Blackwing, or the single filter K&N system.

You should be able to find the Blackwing for around $179 from many Corvette parts sources -- which is what I paid for mine (with free shipping) -- a bargain when considering the performance gain.

Also, most vendors and tuners suggest doing the idle relearn when installing this modification. Not a big deal, takes about 15 minutes, and will give you better drivability right off the bat -- you won't be surging at the first stop light you get to.

Water Problems

I own a 2003 Z06. Several questions.

One. What is the tendency of this vehicle to ingest water through the air intake.

Two. I want to modify the air intake for more performance. Does the Blackwing or K&N gear provide any tendency to suck water into the air intake system. I know the 06 is not a boat.

Three. In the posting below, someone suggests that the Blackwing makes for alot hot air in the engine compartment (i.e., "The black wing is excellent, if you like hot motor compartment air"). I don't understand this comment.

Four. I want to replace the shifter. Someone in the other forum mentions a shorted stock shifter. Where do you find this kind of hear.

Comments appreciated.

You can see the blackwing here in this photo. I sits the same place as stock (doesn't bottom breath) so any water that would get into this would also get into stock. Also, according to all the oil analysis I have seen to date, the Blackwing provides better filtration then the K&N (less silicon in the oil).

As for the question on hot air, the Blackwing doesn't bottom breath or take in air from the front of the car so it isn't a "cold air intake".

I also have a Blackwing one of the best mods I've done:beer
