I'm planning on removing my body from my 63 now that I've made room and was looking for some help.
1. Is there a good body removal reference to buy that will guide me through the process?
2. Also looking for a frame restoration kit (used) and reference manual. I'm trying to save a few bucks by not buying new reference material, stencils, markers, etc.
3. A used bidy lifting sling to buy or borrow. This is another one / two time use items that i would rather not purchase new.

I know it's a long process but I think I'm ready for the task.

Yes the 61 is under going a body-off. I have parts stored all over the shop. The original color is Sateen-Silver and I have secured the Sateen-Silver lacquer paint. The bodywork was done over thirty-five years ago and the quality of the body restoration was poor. This should be an easy restoration because 99% of the original parts are with the car. I only need to restore, repaint or replate the parts. I not sure what you are looking at above the lift. I just purchased a used A-symmetrical lift this past summer, $800.00 installed. It has a two-foot extension and I had to cut an opening in the ceiling to install it

Already did. What about dash removal, where to lift, how to lift, how to support, stripping, crack repair, surface prep., sealing, priming, painting, body mounts, setting the body/ And that's only the body, what about the frame. What I downloaded only told what to disconnect.

Names of reference books would be helpful. Any suggestions?

I do not know of one book that actually explains it step by step.

So of the books I purchased
1-the complete restoration guide vol 2 Again by Noland Adams this is a book that does not give any instuction but I use it more as a reference
2-corvette chassis restoration guide 1953 thru 72
3-fact book of the 1963 thru 1967 stingray by M.F.Dobbins
4-corvette restoration guide 1963-1967 by Richard F.Newton
5-the assembly manual for your car helpfull in figuring out how to put it back together
6-the NCRS judging manual (also excellent for refrence on how things were done from the factory .

I have a wall full of corvette books but these seems to be the most well worn

What about dash removal, where to lift, how to lift, how to support, stripping,

Dash removal?
- remove interior windshield trim
- remove attaching hardware between dash and window frame
- drill out rivets at each dash end
- lower dash (at center) is simply bonded to a raised portion of the floor (directly underneath radio). Carefully separate.

Where to lift?
- between wheelwells
- no one should lift at the extreme front or rear ends
- if body is gutted, 6 guys can easily lift

How to lift?
- bodies or sling

How to Support?
- Noland Adams "Body Lift WorkBook", is available from the bookstore at http://www.NCRS.org
- in it are the plans for this

Body removal

I completed a frame-off on a 1965 last spring. Along with the purchase of reference materials for the body-off and restoration process, I would recommend a purchase of a digital camera, (pictures, pictures, pictures) a good note taking system and method for labeling and storing your parts (zip lock bags and wire bag tags). The better that you are organized on your project, control of the parts that you will farm out for restoration, new or NOS parts needed for replacement, stainless repair, re-chroming and other plating processes; the easier the reassembly will go.

Excellent advice from Ray.

I think a digital camera and a quaility printer is a new tool to have in the restoration toll kit.I have stated it before I do alot of pre planning and actually draw up like a business plan and a time line of what I should have done.

My wife has purchased for me these giant heavey duty zip lock freezer bags.As I disasemble a part of a car I take pictures and notes then put the pictures and notes and also a photo copy of the page from the assembly manual in the freezer bag for re assembly.If I need to order new parts or hardware I make a running list and order when I have a large order so I can take advantage of discounts on large orders or free shipping .If you allways get a 5% or 10% discount on all your part orders it adds up quick to substantual savings .When I finally get the parts or hardware I put them in the correct bag for reassembly.when I am done disasembling an area of the car I go back to my bags and clean/referbish/replace/replate what ever need to be done I get it all done so when the time finally comes for reassemble I am just putting clean parts back on the car and not getting dirty or slowed down by having to clean or paint parts or search for them they are allways in the bag waiting to go on.
PS my wife just recently purchased me these giant platic container with lids on them so I can store all my baggies in them in the basement on shelf for safe keeping instead of cardboard boxs.

You know alot of my car buddies claim I treat it too much like a business venture TOO MUCH PLANNING.And that I am taking all the fun out of the project .I can tell you orginazation is the key to a Speedy,Fun,Quaility,Most afourdable,Suprize less restoration project.

Have used this "lift system" for several body off restorations but found that you need to insert the pizza and beer AFTER the lift is accomplished.
