Breadbox Replacement

I have one of those flat black panels that the aftermarket makes to replace the "breadbox" on the passenger side---I am still deciphering the instructions, but has anyone done this replacement and can offer suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris,

I can't believe you're getting rid of the breadbox! It's so cool!:D Really, I do love the breadbox. It screams Corvette right to you.:D

I just wished it screamed Corvette from a flat/flush panel. Seriously, I guess I am one of the few people who really likes the angular, black and digitized dash on the '89 Corvette----frankly, driving along at night watching the light show (and the road) makes me feel like I am flying/driving along in "BladeRunner", one of my favorite movies, especially with the BladeRunner CD playing! The protruding breadbox jars that, and I really liked the photos of interiors where it's been replaced by the flat panel. Sooooo....that brings me to my question. I also have new repro. '89 Shop Manual on order, so that might help explain things better. The Haynes manual that came with the car is silent on this. If you'd like, I would be happy to send you the breadbox for free when (and if) I get the panel installed----I mean this! Let me know, as I like many of your posts and would be happy to see the breadbox go to a loving home and owner.

Cheers!

Yes, the Atari dash is pretty cool! I couldn't believe that they could do stuff like that in the 80's.:D

Sure, I will take up your offer on the breadbox. I'll have to mount it in my house by my desk.:D

There are members who have done it. It's a bear of a job from what I've read. Especially the 2 screws that are behind, underneath, hidden by........you get the picture.....

That picture reminds me of the M&M commercial with the girl. That is scary!

I've done it, and if you search the forums you should find a thread where I posted pix before/after. If they're not still around, I can post them again.

What I installed was actually a "glovebox" with a nylon flap covering a small shelf, but it's the same idea. If you take off the dash pad, you can use a pair of wirecutters to remove the thin nuts holding on the breadbox. That makes life a LOT easier, with no need for contortions. Having small fingers would help, though.

Also, mine used 2-sided sticky tape to hold the AC vent in place. That lasted all of a day during the summer so I got industrial velcro tape and put one part on the vent and the other on the dash plate. Now it sticks fine and has more room to rotate as well.
