After 2 years of seeing me tote around in my vette, and driving it when ever he came over, my brother in law has finally got the ok to purchase his own toy. Need your opinion on this one, he has come to me for advice on one he found in his price range, so need your help. Here are the details;

88 4+3 , with the z51 option, mint condition with 19,000 miles on it, dark red with black leather interior, not a scratch on it. Owner is asking $14,500 for it, and will not budge on the price. He has been looking for about a month now and has fallen in love with this one. He says it drive's great, but I am warning him about the 4+3 trans. Whatta ya think??? worth the money, or should he keep looking .....seems a little hi to me for a 88, unless the z51 option is rare for that year....

It might be a bit overpriced. Tell him to keep looking, and make comparasions with what else is on the market. He could go to a 92 or newer for that money, maybe even an early c-5.

Just my opinion!

thanks Taeghd, he has found some early 90's for about that price but usaully with 50,00 plus miles on it. No c-5' yet for under $15,000 that I have seen. I think what is selling him on this one is it is a one owner, low. low miles, and it's a stick. Does not hurt either that you can eat off the engine, so he says. I am just concerned with the 4+3 trans, would not want his first vette to be a bad expierence...

Does seem alittle pricey for that year - even with the low miles. However, I know what it is like when you find what appears to be "the one" - price usually isn't a concern at that point......

Although it's hard to dissuade a potential new Corvette owner from buying the very first one he/she finds and "falls in love with", try to convince your brother-in-law not to be hasty! There are many great Corvettes for sale, and he'll never really know what is a good price or not unless he gets out there and compares. I know he probably really wants the '88...and, believe me, so does the owner of that car!;) Tell him to look around. Better yet, go with him. Let us know how he makes out.

P.S. I had an '88 convertible with a 4+3. I never had a problem at all with the 4+3 but was always leery of it because of its reputation for potential problems. I loved that car and was never going to get rid of it, etc., etc. Famous last words.:L "Lemon Peel" has another home, and I'm on to another Vette!

thanks for the replys, believe me he has been looking, for over a month now. I have gone with him on a couple of inquiries, he has seen around 12 vettes so far and he is getting the itch realllly bad. I think I will tell him to go with his gut feeling, that's what I usually do. If he can get this guy to come down a bit I think it will be in his garage by the week end. Hey, after all, no matter what he buys, its a VETTE!!!!...

I'd say he's got time at that price. Walk away, and keepm looking. The guy might reconsider on the price at some point. What kind of service records and history are available on the 88? That's a TON of bank for that car, although it sounds really nice.

Also, he should consider how, or how much it will cost him to insure it for the cost, or value at that price. It's more or less irreplaceable (sp).
