I think it's become clear that the IRS is going to have to be changed to something stronger, :hb but, not one of those f*** rear ends. I'm seriously looking into copying the Olds (our race car) rear set-up, which will be a racing quick-change grafted onto the Vette. Either a 3 or 4 link with a watts link.

The yokes are breaking and I have yet to really get on it and go through the gears! I will probably sell all of our rear suspension pieces including offset, hd trailing arms, double adjustable VBP rear spring set-up, etc....

Our Keisler transmission should be here in early January, so hopefully we can still make the Gainesville Winter Jam II.

It's the tires man! You need skinny hard tires to keep from loading those parts so much.:Silly

Tom's can help you out some with that problem. I think that they offer a heavy duty replacement for every part in the rear driveline. Byond that it's time for a live axle.:hb

Keep your forum friends informed if you decide to sell your heavy duty IRS parts.

Get a street rod mag and look for a Heidts add they make an IRS based on a ford 9 inch that you should be able to make work.
Some of the aftermarket yokes are heat treated to be stronger then stock, I replaced mine with them and have not had a problem but I am only a 383. The 383 snapped a stocker in half.
Good Luck

Wow, that looks nasty. Well I think that's what you get with all the traction from your rear tires meets the mighty torque from that monster engine!

If you are selling the rear end stuff, please let me know. I'm looking for something new for my 75...

Wow! Talk about raw torque!

Those look like they are made of cast iron, the way it broke apart.
Can you get forged steel yokes? Do they even make them?

Bill

Thats BAD A$$... You know your really making some power when you start breaking stuff...

I believe the yokes were forged steel with hardened tips (for wear). They sure look crystalized. It looks like it will be cheaper for me to go with a quick change than to buy the available heavy duty aftermarket pieces required. At least those are my thoughts at the moment.

We will definitely offer our IRS parts for sale. They have less than 3000 miles on them. I'm now open for bids. :D

How much torque are you throwing at these things? I'm moving my L-81 up to a 383 stroker and I was curious as to whether or not I might have issues? (no drag stripping here, just a few "spirited" stoplight go's)

TZ may or may not share the actual hp/tq from his motor. Let me just say that we don't call it BRUISER just because of the car's race inspired good looks. I don't think it is possible for any small block to generate what his bigger block is producing. I am not having these challenges out of my 468 BB with lots of go fast goodies. I think you will be plenty safe with the 383 as long as you don't 5,000 RPM dump the clutch every chance you get.

thanks 69myway. I sorta figured that, but being a first time engine rebuilder, I wanted to set my worries asside!

According to the dyno sheet it's putting out just under 700 lbs feet of torque, but the dyno it was on is known to be very conservative. I never had this trouble with the full race 355 and road race slicks!

Just a question;
why NOT put a 9"-Ford in it?
